G'day all

I am heading back to Scone from Bunbury in less than two weeks and am debating whether to change the oil in the 1HZ troopy or not.

About 97% of my driving since the last change has been on country roads and the remainder around Bunbury.

I have worked it out that when I get home I will have done a bit under 9K since the last change.

Is that stretching it a bit too much, or should I just do it before I leave.

I normally do it every 5K.

Hi Booboo,

If you change your oil every 5000ks then it will probably play on your mind the whole way across.Personally I dont think it is going to be a problem for you. I have a 100 series and have missed the 5000k oil change a couple of times and didnt find any problems, except that it used a little bit and im only talking no more than a half a litre.Carry some oil with you and check daily which you probably already do and you should be ok.

I remember that Steve from Top End Explorer Tours did oil samples on his 1hz's and the oil became less effective after 6500km. So this is the max I would go.

hi booboo
if your intending to keep your vehicle for the long hall
i would change it
i'm a staunch believer of 5000km oil change periods irrespective of the roads
its the oil that lubricates your engine parts and 9 against 5 is almost double km's oil does becomes contaminated the longer you drive
its your call

Boo Boo,

A long time a go I was told that "Oil's cheaper than engines". With a petrol engine I'd be tempted to carry some spare oil and head for home without changing it. Oil works much harder in a diesel though so I'd definitely change it at 5000 km, especially before taking on a long trip which otherwise will run it over by thousands of km.

Cheers

9,000 km is a little too far, on the older engines.
I do my oil changes every 5000km on the run, no matter where I am. I just do it.

I also catch the old oil and dispose of thoughtfully.

Cheers

Hi Bucky & Boo Boo,
Pa agrees with you Bucky.
A $100.00, oil change is far cheaper than replacing a motor.
He also disposes of it thoughtfully.
We've been advised to never keep oil for more than six months once opened.
So buying in bulk may not be so cheap in the long run.
Pa loves your slogan! Bucky, but I can tell you that he does consult but doesn't always agree!!!!! And doesn't always obey!. LOL.
Take care, safe travels.
Bye Ma.

Hi Bucky,
After I shut down last night, I remembered SWMBO & thought that I hadn't seen his posts around for a while refering to his Missus.
I haven't seen a few of the friendly members on here for ages.
The ones that were our first contacts

Pa is the minister for finance. I have a part time job and earn a bit of money.
So when the minister for finance tells me that we can't afford something he said we could afford a month ago, I then become the minister of war but not for long.

I love some of the Motos on here.
Take care, safe travels.

Boo Boo, I don't know what brand of oil you use, but I use Delo 400.

My vehicle is recommended oil change at 5000 km. That was in 1986 when my vehicle was new and I thought 20 plus years of development in oil technology might have changed the requirements a bit.

I did 7500 kms and got the oil analysed professionally and the report came back with negligible degradation and contamination of the oil.
It also said do another analysis after another 500 hours.
So, that's what I did, another 5000 kms and got the same oil analysed again.

The report came back and the oil was still in excellent condition. And that was after 12500 kms.

Now I change the oil at 10000 kms and am confident that this oil will last the distance.
Maybe different types of oil will give a different analysis after the same Kms.

Dave.
Thanks for your observations and analysis of your oil condition.
Could I ask what vehicle it is that you are checking the oil condition/contamination?
I did very similar, both in a 1997 1hz. L/C, and a 1997 300tdi Landrover Discovery.
Whilst the oil becomes a darker colour in the L/C than the Disco, both oil analysis at 7500km. is almost identical (as are the oils, Mobil xhp)

The L/C is now ahead of the Disco in km., 290 to 230 kkm.
Neither use oil between changes (7500km.)

Mike, it's the one in the rig pic, a 1986 60 Series 12HT Sahara.

Hasn't quite got to 250K yet, but it will in the next few weeks.

Oil can go off quickly, and I still cannot work that one out

eg. ......at 3,500km the oil feels smooth and is still like honey in colour. Then at 4,500km it is almost black, and at 5,000 it feels like there is grit in it.

Now I know that is unburnt diesel, or carbon deposits, but what I am getting at is that oil can go off very quickly.
Yet at times the oil still feels smooth at 5,000km

If I tow or just straight highway work, it does not seem to matter that much.

It could be the state of the injectors, that have a bearing on that..
That is why she goes in tomorrow for a birthday,
Injectors, pump timing, and Dyno tuned, and of course the glow plugs

will cost too, but will be worth it
Cheers
Bucky

Gday mate, i personally as a diesel mechanic would change the oil and give the air filter a clean after driving on country roads (if they were gravel/dirt/bulldust) just to be sure. Better to send $100 on doing some prevention now then a night or 2 on the side of the road.

I was pretty much convinced before I posted, but now fully convinced.

I am hoping I can do it at the golf resort here, if not I have seen a couple of quiet dead end back tracks I can use.

I normally do the change even if we are away from home, but this time we have been accommodated in a unit rather than a house.

I also dispose of the oil at the area provided in the local dumps.

Thanks for tactfully telling me to change the oil.

Hi All,
Just wondering are you saying that regardless of the service intervals recommended by the manufacturers you would change the oil in a diesel every 5000 Kms. or is this just for the older Diesel's.

Sorry my wife is always telling I am a bit vague.
I have a 2010 Isuzu and the service intervals are 10K would it be a good habit to get into now to change the oil every 5K and change the filter at the scheduled services or are you guys doing oil and filter every 5K.

Andrew

I would stick to the scheduled services for a late model vehicle the technology is so much better and the service intervals seem reasonble.

Is it a Dmax? And if so how long have you had it and what do you think of it?

I am looking at a Dmax to replace my aging Troopy in the next 12 months. I have not heard about any major dramas with them.

Hi Boo Boo,
Yes it's a Isuzu Dmax LSM, I have had it almost 6 month and have done just under 17000 kms
Very happy with it the only negative thing i have to say about Max is the suspension is a little soft (going in for a complete redo on Monday) and there very little storage room in the cab. they harp on about the fuel stats in there marketing and to my surprise it is justified. around town and on the freeways I get 10ltr/100kms.
and when we go away and are towing the van (2000kgs) iI am getting between 12 and 12.6lts/100/kms.very comfortable to drive. One of the first thing I tried at the dealership was with the drivers seat in the full back position would I fit in the back and surprisingly yes I did quite comfortably I am 6"5".
all in all its a great vehicle.
