Hi all I need some help I can't decide over 100 series or 76 series.
I have done all the research but just can't split them. I want a turbo diesel. I know about the oil usage in the 76s and the comfort ( I have a troopy and love it!!) and also on the 100s the issues with the IFS (what about fuel).
I hope to start a family soon and are already 1/4 of the way around Oz (after 3yrs, Slow trip!!) Love getting off the beaten track.
Just thought i would throw it out there to see if anyone has something good they can share with me that i haven't already thought of?
PS not interested in anything other than a Toyota after having owned one for the last 5 years with nothing going wrong with it!!
Cheers

We all have different priorites Rooey.

In your case one of those cars has a narrow track , leaf springs and lacks a lot of saftey features has less internal space and you mention you wish to start a family !

Interesting choice of Toyota's, if the 76 is a second car in other words you have a passenger car for your daily drive and the 76 is the off road weapon then I would go the 76, if you need a single car (4wd) the obvious choice is the 100 series. Driving around Australia in 100 with cruise on would be the way to go for long distance touring with a family, however off the beaten track well you would have reason the 76 series is the better choice, as kids we were in the back of a series 3 Landy had the time of our life, even enjoyed it better when dad got a cruiser....

Have just done a 55,000k round trip over 13 months in a 100TD and wouldnt even think about the other. We went on all the tracks we wanted to and in comfort.
I NEVER use Cruise as it uses more fuel than manual driving

I also NEVER TOW in 5TH O/D

We averaged 17.5l per 100km over the whole trip towing a 2800kg van.

Nothing worse than the cruise accelerating up a hill when you would just feather it off near the top.

Just my experience.

Graham,
How did the IFS hold up? Always hearing different reports about strength?

Well apart from servicing the only thing I have done is replace belts as necessary and a pair of front shocks.
Havent had a puncture even in 90,000k.

If its lower control arms you are on about it was only in a certain set of Vin numbers in 2002 when a welding robot got on the Sake.

Only need reinforcing with outrageous lifts.

Thanks for that Graham, I wasn't aware of that about the 02 models I just thought it was a design fault in Most models!
Thanks for clearing that up!!

There was an article in 4WD Monthly a couple of years ago about buying 100 series and gave the actual Vin number series.

Is a bit of a myth like the supposed fact that 100 ser have front diffs out of Hiluxes.
They also had an article showing the two diff internals and are nothing like each other.

The problem of them breaking was due to the way the teeth were cut and putting too much pressure on them when doing a snatch recovery up hill in reverse.

Lcool will give you a good insight into Toyotas good and bad

Wouldn`t change to 100 at this stage, completed the loop last year over 24,500k in 5/6 months towing a heavy weight van plus plenty of off road stuff as well.....Have often thought about a 76 ute or the 4 door version, but giving up the auto box & cruise is not for me....and yeah the cruise sometimes goes ballistic on uphill, but the fix is easy !!

You want Luxury go the 100.
We have the 76 four door to replace the 80 GXL. Sure the 76 is stiffer over the bumps but as our kids are now older having no carpet is a bonus. We have plenty of room in the back. This car we have decided to not put a cargo barrier or draws in as in the 80 we cant fit bikes swags or even the mower is too hard for me to lift onto the draws. I would think twice about taking a baby over rough terrain. It gets a bit jerky for their necks ess if they are asleep.
We are yet to tow the camper with it but like most work horses I hope it rides better with a load on the back.

Just my .02.

I currently have a pov pack 105 series diesel. It has the 1HZ and I tow a camper at times. There is no doubt I have been lusting after more power, stronger gearbox and have had a look and a drive of the 76 series. These are the pros and cons as far as I'm concerned....

76 Pros:
Great engine with lots of power, torque and reasonable economy.
Basic simple design
Rigid front axle and suspension....stronger...better off road
Not TOO much electronics (to go wrong at the worst possible moment)
Age old design with great parts and service availability in remote areas.

76 Cons:
Expensive for what it is....might have to sell off a couple of kidneys to afford it...
Less comfort than my pov pack 105
Smaller luggage capacity
Leaf spring rear...rougher over the corrrrruggations
Electronic engine management system... I run UHF,VHF and HF comms and I just know this will be noisier than the old tech 1HZ, particularly for HF. (105 is silent for RFI).
Noisier than the 105.

I'm sure there are more, but I can't remember this late at night.

I do remember after my test drive of the 76 GXL that I was quite happy to get back into the 105. Even the pov pack seemed fairly luxurious in comparison. The 105 drove more smoothly and quietly, but with much less power of course.

Would I still like a 76.....yep, but not at the price they're going for, given what I'd get for mine with only 115k km on the clock. Would be about 40k c/over.... :-0

All the best with the decision.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks for the detailed reply Mark!!
I think I am leaning towards the 100s but like you just love the 76s for what it is and the motor but.....
