I am having trouble with a Landcruiser HJ47. The free wheeling hubs are snaping the studs off the secure the hub on. I have replaced some but I still seem to loose on every now and then. The hub is located with two dowl pins and they are fine but the studs keep going missing. The vehicle has the hubs in most the time as its a farm vehicle. Hope someone has come across this before.
Cheers Matt

Maybe have a look at your front wheel bearings? They could possibly be a bit loose.

Thanks, Wheel bearings are ok. no excessive wobble. One thing I have noticed is the drive shaft is sloppy in the stub axle. How much movement should the be between the stab axle bush and the shaft?

I have had a similar problem with my previous HJ75 but this was on the rear hubs. I believe it was a combination of bent axle housing and out of balance tail shaft and general heavy loading.
This may be different with the front hubs. My rear ones would also snap the locating dowel off. I would guess yours are trying to push outwards. Have you checked the retaining cir-clip is still in place.
My solution after getting a replacement rear housing, replacement hubs, replacement tailshafts, diff overhaul, countless stud replacements was to - drill the studs out and retap them with 10mm studs and larger cone washers.
On the new VDJ landcruisers this seems to be the fix from toyota as
well because they now all come with 10mm bolts and the wheel studs are up to 16mm now.
Cheers

If it's mainly on the farm use, why not replace the freewheel hubs with solid drive flanges.
The difference in fuel use and steering effort will be virtually unnoticable.

Malleerv,
Your original post said that the free wheel hubs were snapping the stubs!
Replace the f/w hubs, solve the problem..
If the studs still break it's not the hubs causing the problem, start checking wheel bearings, stuffed uni's in the hubs (not the tailshafts), bent axle housing.
Disco.
