Most exhaust specialists will telll you that a 3'' is too big for such a small engine. Its not required to have such a large diamatre exhaust, more a high flowing muffler and cat. A mandrel bend 2.5'' with high flow muffler and cat is all you need.

I thought that was the case for NA engines. I assume the Nav CRDi engine is turboed and hence already has enough back pressure (due to the wastegate) so a
milo tin-sized exhaust is OK.

A 2.5'' exhaust would be too big for a NA 2.5 litre.
It wont really add any benefits going with 3'' over 2.5'', and 2.5'' will be cheaper.
There are alot more to exhausts then just back pressure or diamater. A good exhaust is worth its weight in gold on any vehicle. Its just the costs can outweigh the benefits by a huge margin.

Guys you might like to do a search on the
Navara Forum - there has been quite a lot of discussion on this. Don't forget that the 2.5 CRDI engine is fitted to the D22 and D40 Navara and the Pathfinder since about 2005.

Might be a silly question, but have you sought the advice of an exhaust specialist?

Performance gains are reasonable on the Navara 2.5, can i ask if it is automatic??
If so there is no real way of getting around the DPF hence most exhaust manufacturers are now not supporting the automatic vehicles.
