I have a cruiser 100TD.
it's currently running Bilsteins shocks and from the part numbers on the Tbars, looks like I have Iron Man springs.
I find the set-up Ok for on road and slow off road stuff but corregations and rocky stuff it terrible....always feels like I've got 60psi in the tyres no matter what pressure you run.
It's too stiff and I'm wondering if it is the shocks or the spring causing the issue. Bilstein are suppose to be pretty good stuff and I can't imagine the iron Man gear being so rigid, so I suspect the shocks are the issue.
Anyone know the answer? I don't really want to go to the expence of changing the shocks but maybe I have to???
Cheers

There are probably a number of setups you can get Andrew the prince among which are the Rancho shocks with the in cabin adjustment. But before you go to the expense of changing out your
suspension - have you tried varying your tyre pressures on gravel roads. I tend to run 40-45 psi in BFG AT on the bitumen but drop this to 25-28 when on corrugated gravel and find it works for me. Used to work on my Patrol with and OME setup and also works on the D40 Navara with a Ridepro setup.

Yep tried all that...like I said...it feels like 60psi no matter pressure I run.

It could be either. How does the vehicle behave wih some load in it?
Bilstien are not known for there supple ride. They are an excellent shock but not valved as soft as some, how ever if the are rebuildable versions you could have this rectified.
Any good
suspension shop or 4wd
shop "should" be able to roadtest it with youj and tell you if it's shocks or springs.

Andrew,
Since you mention Tbars I assume you have an IFS cruiser like
mine.
I have Bilstein shocks on my 100 and HD TJM bars and coils. When unladen my ride is firm and would probably be harsh on corrugations but I have always been loaded so don't know. I played with my setup for a while changing a few things but decided that my current setup works
well at my touring weight so am sticking to it.
Do you still have the original shocks? If so then I would make the effort of putting them back in for a trial. It should tell you if the shocks are the primary cause.
Frankly I think that it is near impossible to get a
suspension that rides
well under all loads. Perhaps a cab adjustable shock system may be the answer but have never tried it as I prefer to not have one more thing to go wrong in the bush.
cheers

In your rigpic your car seems to be sitting quite high in the front for a IFS 100 series that is empty. A possibility is your Tbars are too heavy for the weight or are wound too far up. Either way Iron Man & Bilsteins seem an unusual pairing & unlikely the spring rate was ever matched to the shocks. Billy's are a naturally firm shock giving a somewhat stiff ride but find
mine to excell on high speed corrugated roads.
"...it feels like 60psi no matter pressure I run." Out of intrest what pressure do you run & speed you normally travel at on corrugated roads?
Cheers Craig....................

Craig
it doesn't actually sit that high any more......sits nicely now with the nose slightly down.
I run 34 - 40 psi depending on road conditions and what I'm doing, much less sand driving of course. I've had plenty of off road driving experience, I live in the country, and used many different cars, towed stuff etc.
It's just a weird combo, and on the corrugations....
Exmouth to
Coral bay down
the beach side track....I tried tyre pressures from @36psi down to 20psi. Running BFG's
There was little difference in the ride...felt like I had steel rims and no rubber.
Very disappointing, I'd like a little more 'glide' out of it.
Maybe I expect too much but maybe the Iron man stuff is crap.

Rather than the product being crap, i would suggest it's either not right for the application or mismatched.
Shocks and spring rates don't need to be matched so much as the weight
the springs are carrying and the weight the shocks are trying to control.
Does it handle considerably better with a 100kg's or so in the back?

I've got draws in the back + about 20 - 30kgs of gear in them all the time. It handles ok in most conditions...it's just the extreme harshness of corregations that's got me stuffed...
