Hi Pete
Take it to a good Auto Sparky, it may just need a good service. On our old Paj, the Brushes and bearing were replaced at the 100k mark with no problems at all and a lot cheaper than a new one. From memory it cost about the $110 mark.
Cheers
Stephen

Hi Greendog
I regularly take both my alternator and starter motors out, clan the brushes with petrol and then leave them in the sun for a for hours to completely dry. I had a similar noise sometime ago from my alternator, and found that after a good clean it worked
well again.
Probably a foolish question, but if your batteries are low, is the belt turning the alternator, first thing I would check, and if you are running through an isolator, is the isolator working as
well. Just a couple of things to think about.
Cheers

My work car is a new commodore and when the batteries are low ( had car fridge on went stopped ) it whistles which I assume is caused by the the extra load.
Actualy sound cool.
