Hi gang,
Anyone know anything about activating the low range option in a Dyna transfer case? I've got a fully-imported (high maintenance) BB58 that I believe is fitted with a Dyna gearbox with low range as an unused option.
In fact, does anyone know anything about BB58s full stop? We should compare notes because information is hard to come by.
Cheers,
Monte

Climb under the bus and hanging out the side of the transfer case is a round shaft with a flat on one side, grip it with vicegrips or similar and it will rotate to three positions. As you know the 4wd is constant with a button on the dash to lock the centre diff, this is the H4 position, there will be a neutral position and then low range.
It just needs a lever and a bowden cable to operate it. Or you could have a rigid linkage but would be easier with a cable.

Mate what you may need to do is have a look at the top of the gearbox transfer and see if there is a flat plate, pull off all the flat looking plate ON TOP OF GEARBOX AND TRANSFER ONLY, beneath said plates yo umight find a couple of f looking slide bars, these should move if you apply some force to them not too much just enough for them to move.

That should be you transfer case selectors. I would try to see if a similat model transfer levers will fit.

Thanks Christopher,
By the way, that "walk alone" quote; where is it from? It's very apt.

I made it up myself using some words from the Green day's Boulevard Of Broken Dreams"

I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone

This song was an inspiration to me, and has helped me thru some of the most difficult times. Winston Churchill had severe depression and called it his black dog!

Me i call it my walk alone.

Sorry to hijack this thread, can't mm Claude.

sorry

congrats on your purchase Monte, 4x4 coasters are an ultimate getaway vehicle...

don't be to fussed about trying to make the linkages extend all the way into the cabin...

at present mine run to a front wheel arch where i can operate them by lever in through the arch... i have plans to run them to the cabin but it's low on the list...

that may sound archaic and wouldnt impress the shiny set but switching a 4500kg vehicle into 4x4 is much more of an considered event than usual

Normally i just switch my rear-locker but if i have to go into full 4b I get out to switch my transfere, then swing my hubs, then check tyres, then vacume lines running to the lockers, then walk the section, then have a cup of tea and then tackle the 10meters of soft sand...

the weight is a major consideration, i dont want to get stuck so it is back to the basics every time...

Hi roberttbruce,

Thanks for your droll response - you raised a laugh.

If I understood correctly you've got rear diff lock and locking hubs? Surely not true 4x4 in a 4WD coaster? If so, how do I get these rare and beautiful things?

lol's Claude, i raised a laff and it looks i raised some envy too...lol...
in reality my droll was a troll for a pose....lol...

my machine was built in '97 & last pitted in QLD in '07
it is based on a '78 model coaster, has F250 4x4 Hi-Boy running gear, dana diffs, spicer turners, lockers front and rear, fwh's, and a 350 chev on a T7 auto on gas - 23L/100K's

It truly is an engineering marvel. It is very fast on the highway, able to crawl canyons and no creaks or groans typical with conversions...whoever built it was truly talented...

It's fully plated, fully fitted, has barely two corroded spots, has a reco roof, 500 watts of panel and a bitchy-bluey-Tiapan sitting behind the front seat... an inch thick dossier details over 65K spent....

but it does look droll ... it just needs some shiny paint ...BUT - i push it through the scratchy bush a lot so i prolly wont do the paint untill i settle down in a nursing home... lol...

The best thing about - when arriving at camp, no set-up required...
The worst thing about it - getting stuck can be a major drama, the weight is a major consideration...

have fun with yours Claude, they are an ultimate vehicle able to deliver an ultimate experience...

Thanks guys,
That should give me a bit to work with. Nice to know there's some knowledge out there. I've been battling Claude for about 18 months now and sometimes it feels more like I've got an alien on my hands than a mere import.

PS Peter, Dave (Tour Boy) tells me you know a bit about portal hubs as well, and you've found an oil that helps preserve them?

On that model, are the portals just on the front or on the back as well?

garrycol,
just front portals on the BB58 - I believe the megacruiser had portals front and back but had trouble with stability in corners.
