Hi all,

my old man is driving my mum mad trying to get a good picture on the tv in their caravan. He's not very tv tech minded and just needs a simple aerial on a pole that will work in coastal populated areas, ie: Kingscliff, Evans Head, Tathra. He's tight too so it needs to be cheap. Could anyone please give me their thoughts and experiences to give me some idea of what he needs. Thanks,

TJ...

Hi TJ,

Not an expert on caravan antennas, but recently saw this advertised in a Jaycar Catalogue.

"Outdoor Omni-Directional UHF/VHF Amplified Digital Antenna "

"With inbuilt low noise and high gain booster, this compact and weather resistant outdoor digital antenna is ideally suited for caravans, boats, and other fixed or mobile applications where space is constrained or harsh environmental conditions require a little extra durability. Excellent wide frequency reception for local free-to-air analogue and digital TV, DAB+ digital radio as well as FM radio transmissions. It can be either base mounted or mast mounted; and includes mounting bracket, 12V mains power adaptor and a 12V in-car charger. "

$79.95

If you do a product search on the Jaycar website www.jaycar.com.au you should be able to find it. It may/may not suit your needs.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi there TJ

I'm new to this forum but I saw your request. We have just come back from travelling Vic to QLD in the old caravan. We have an old T style aerial that we put on a pole and attach to the A frame of the caravan. My husband who is a tv addict found that the longer the pole the better the reception. The aerial is a Winguard??? I think but its just a pole with a cross arm that can be moved up or down. Very basic and very cheap and it worked fine.

I hope this has helped.

A Winegard is the retractable model that is usually provided on vans

They are also definitely NOT cheap

What you have is possibly a Happy Wanderer or similar

Have a lookHERE

I have the T type one, and it works very well. You have it with or without the booster. Was out at Woomera last year, and got sensational reception there, but unfortunately Qld flogged us in State of Origin that night.

Hi TJ
Can thoroughly recommend a Happy Wanderer TV antenna - about $100 from Dick Smith and similar stores. I've used this antenna with a digital TV all over Australia over the last 2 years with perfect reception in Perth, Broome, Carnarvon, Geraldton, Alice Springs, Mount Isa, Port Douglas, Cairns, Noosa, Brisbane etc etc. Mine fits on a screw on fitting on the van roof - about 2 minutes to fit and adjust. Simple to store and set up, easy to tune (just see which way other caravans have theirs pointing). It comes with a pole and about 3-4 metres of TV cable.

Hope this helps.
Regards
Rob
