Hi people
The wife and I found 3 light truck (4wd) tyres just off the CSR. They were obviously someones spares, as they have the little rubber nodules on them meaning they have never been used. There was also something else with the tyres, and the owner would know what that thing is.
I would like the owner to get their property back, and would be happy to freight it back to them, as they are not cheap tyres, so iof someone contacts me by MM with the correct brand name and what the other item is, I will make sure they get their property back.
Cheers

Maybe, just maybe, they were deliberately left there by someone for someone else who desperately needed them.
Now, when they get there they will be gone and they will be in strife.
Just maybe, I said...........

Possibly, but I think they would have left a note.

Hi Peter & Margaret
That could have been the case, but the ground marks clearly showed where they had landed, which told us they had "bounced off" a vehicle. The mud around the tyres also told us they had been there before the last rain, some 3 weeks.
The other item on the third tyre tells us that the car owner did not know they had lost the tyres, it is a very specific kind of wheel carrier from a specific type of vehicle. We also found the snapped studs and nuts from where one of the tyres had come off the carrier.
We were very careful about looking at the tracks and ground marks first, and the location was not somewhere you would intentionally leave something. We have contacted Kunawaritji, and they have told us that no other vehicles are coming as yet, and they know we have the tyres. If required we will take them back out and leave them there, which I will do if I hear nothing. I wont hold onto something that is not
mine.
Cheers

Hi Marc,
That extra info certainly changes the likelyhood of why they were there.
I reckon you should hang on to them. No sense chucking them out in
the desert or donating them to someone else who does not own them either.
Once the police have done their thing, they will legitimately (and fairly) be yours.
Cheers,
Peter

Hi
Just spoke to the wife anmd we will return the tyres to where we found them. Try and do the right thing and people need to jump to the wrong conclusion.
If the owner is a member, the tyres will be near the big "bump" that broke your passengers side mirror, which is very close to where we found them.
No further replies please, we will just return them to where we found them.
Cheers

Seems like you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Probably if you take them back to where you found them, there's a good chance they will go the same way as the fuel at the CSR fuel dump, some people just can't help themselves.

Hi Marc Luther,
iIwould have thought it more responsible that you hang on to them now that many people know who has them. The bush telegraph will find the owner in a short time and they wont be to pleased that you dropped them back, only to find someone else driving past has grabbed them for themselves.. My thoughs only.

hang on to em Marc ....... you know exacty how they got there and they were not "placed" there ...........
Or give em to the coppers and they can deal with them, word will get around quickly and the owner will come forward very soon, end of the day you have done exactly what i would have done and the owners will be very grateful for that...
Anyone dumb enough to leave that many tyres out in the open is asking for trouble, better solutions than that out there..

Hang on to them and let the police procedure proceed. Sounds like they were not intentionally left there.
Just wait a while.

G`day Marc,
Hang on to them Marc,
May I suggest that you notify the nearest police and tell them the situation and ask them to notify the other police stations along the
routes that the owners may have possibly taken.
Even though you say the tyres appear to have been there a while, the owners may have reported them missing to the police.
If I ever lose something out near your area I hope you are the person to find it. LOL
Goodonya,
Scrubby

Hi Scrubby
EWe already contacted the police, but they reckon they don't need any more items picked up from this area. They will let anyone know where the
wheels are (I said tyres on the
forum, but they a full
wheels), and if someone contacts me they will get them back.
Cheers

Good on you Marc. I'm sure the word will spread further with a better chance of the right owner being found with what you have done than leaving them out there for the wrong owner to pick up. If you are concerned about some of the comments suggesting the owner may have left them there knowingly, leave a note in a large jar (obvious and waterproof) giving your contact details at
the spot you found them. It is possible that they were aware of the breakage and loss but had no way of picking them up at the time.

Hi Marc,
Don't take the negative comments of a select few people to heart - yes it's possible for the owners of the tyres to go back on look for them, but highly unlikely. For example, they probably don't know where they lost, nor if it bounced off into the scrub, where they would not be able to see it from the road.
You've taken lots of steps to make sure the right people have been notified (Police, the local Community near where they were found). I don't think there would be many people out there who would do this - it's a credit to you.
To be quite honest, they're a lot safer with you, than being left out there in the elements, for any dishonest traveler to pick up.
Good work.
Nick

Hi Nick
Thankyou for your very relevant point. We only found them because wwe noticed some strange marks on the track, and thought that someone may have rolled over, so we checked. The person had left the track very quickly, and there were no brake marks at all, so we figure they must have regained their steering and went on.
We will go back and see if there are any otrher indicators in the tracks or anything else laying around that may let us know who it was, but I somehow doubt it.
I think you are wrong though, as I believe that most people would be completely honest in such a matter.
Cheers

Hi Marc,
I'd hope that 99% of travellers are honest people - especially out in a remote area like the CSR. Trouble is the 1% who aren't. An example of this is the
Capricorn Roadhouse Fuel Dump, which i am led to believe is finishing up as a result of theft (and not isolated incidents either). A shame that a small minority can spoil it for the rest.
Unfortunately in this day and age (especially in the major Cities), you can't always rely on the good will of people to do the right thing. In saying this, it's not worth loosing sleep over, just something to keep in the back of your mind.
cheers,
Nick

Hi again Nick
From what I have been able to find out, it was some of the local mob who protested against the fuel drops, as they were getting sick and tired of being accused of pinching fuel.
I can guarantee that 99% of people who live out in areas like where I am would never consider inconveniencing someone by pinching their fuel, such would cause more problems and shame than it would be worth.
It is the people travelling through these kinds of areas who prop up the local economies, and most people would rather have travellers so that they can attempt to sell their artwork and the like.
Cheers

Been sitting trying to figure out how you loose three tyres at once and not notice it.
Two off the wheel carriers an one off the roofrack.?
Just wondering?

Hi Doug
That would be good, but we do not have mobile coverage, nor do we have a house phone, only Skype and Satellite phone. If the owner is not a member, they can leave contact details for me and I will get in touch.
I have suffered identity theft once, so I will never publish my email address or any other details. It is not fun to find out that someone else is pretending they are you, and you suddenly find your credit card being used for all sorts of things. My bank has refunded all the money finally, but warned me not to give out details over the net.
Cheers

Marc, This may be stating the bleeding obvious, but have you left a message with VKS? There is a very good chance that if someone is on the CSR, they will have access to a HF. This is also a great example of how a HF can be more useful than a Sat phone.

Hi all
Contact was made at 0500 hours this morning, the wheels, wheel carrier and wheel cover have been correctly identified this morning. A German or Austrian couple who were apparently driving a bit quick at night and lost control. I will (hopefully) be meeting them on the Tanami to return their property.
I had also contacted a few local businesses to establish if anyone had done any welding, and found out who they were and where through that. I have asked no questions about what happened, nor will I, none of my business. I am just happy that the right people will get their possessions back.
I am going to ask the moderators to lock the thread.
Cheers
