I broke the rules (apologies moderators), so am re-creating the thread without breaking them again!

Had a roadworthy done on HZJ75 Landcruiser today. Have been knocked back because the load rating on the tyres is 109. The tyres are on Sunraysia rims. Apparently according to the book load rating required for this vehicle is 114.

Tyres are 31*10.5*15 and according to both the place doing roadworthy and another major retailer you cannot get a tyre of that size with a 114 load rating.

It seems my only option is to but a pair of split rims and new tyres.

A few questions:

What is a reasonable price to pay for a pair of serviceable 2nd hand split rims for a 75 series?

Are they widely available?

Are the split rims off a hilux the same as off the 75 series?

How much should I expect to pay for tyres that will meet the 114 load rating? I'm after the cheapest option.

Finally - does VicRoads have any system from stopping you from shopping around for roadworthy certificates? It might be worth the $100 risk to get a second 'opinion'!

Hey Tim,

There is nothing stopping you from "shopping around" for a roadworthy. Currently there is no data base to record 'who' has taken a vehicle 'where' for an inspection unless the Roadworthy certificate is issued and recieve by vicroads.
Although it is true about the load rating i think you be unlucky to have too many people pick up on that during a roadworthy inspection. As much as i don't really want to say, i think that probably would have slipped under the radar for me.
What size are your rims? Can you "Borrow" a set of rims to get you through.. Not that i should condone that sort of thing but it might be worth looking into.

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks Dan - I do feel a bit stiff - especially as the vehicle was sold to me with a roadworthy with 109 rated tyres on it.

I don't know anyone to 'borrow' the rims off unfortunately.

I am planning on buying a td5 era 130 land rover defender to replace the cruiser - and wondered if they have the same split rims? Anyone know?

Bloody heck Tim, if you're in the Valley there's plenty of places for a RWC. Ask some of your mates or try a 4x4 specialist outfit. There are two on the eastern end of Argyle Street, Traralgon that may be able to help. Also one in McMahon Street, T'gon as well.

Cheers Mick

Defender rims won't fit.

As a suggestion, pop in to another venue and without mentioning the load issue, just mention you're looking at getting a roadworthy but before you book it in are the tyres ok to pass? they'll think you're meaning tread wise and they'll tell you they're ok, taking there attention away from the tyres at the time of the inspection. Not morally au fait, but the dollars are best off in your pocket.
I think there is about 150kg difference in the load rating with 109 being around 1000kg. meaning you can have upto 2000kg per axle. 109's aren't technically correct but neither is a 4 ton troopy..

Tim

I have been chasing some splits and the 6 stud rims are becoming really quite rare. I have seen some go for quite a bit - like $80 a rim.

If you're trying to get rid of your cruiser you probably don't want to get new tyres, but i think if you upgrade to 33' tyres quite a few of them are 144 rated - but i could be wrong.

Take it back to the bloke who issued the previous certificate. If he knocks i back then you have recourse on him.

OK, I'm now running 2 strategies here.

1. I am booked in for another road worthy next week at a different joint if I cant solve this easily/at reasonable cost. Of course that might not solve the problem anyway - but seems worth the punt.

2. I am searching the wreckers for rims/used tyres to suit. I have found a wrecker who has 4 good second hand tyres 750R16 - but the splits were the newer 5 stud.

Given the Original Toyota Rims are hard to find, what other rims will suit?

In Qld what you propose would nowadays be picked up on the computer system , IE: shopping around for a roadworthy /safety certificate , when the new owner goes to change rego the unfinalised roadworthy /safety certificate number will come up on the computer when rego+vin numbers are processed , can mean another trip over the pits for a VERY thorough inspection , another problem you may have not thought about is your insurance policy , unroadworthy means an instant out for most policies.

As does running tyres with a lesser load rating than specified.

Also could negate an insurance claim if a blowout for instance caused the accident.
