I was told by a Caravan Dealer that they go by the Internal Measurement.

Cheers

Hi Oldpop,

I'm no expert, but I consider a 16' van to be the van only, then you have to add on the length of rear bumper/wheel carrier, and the A frame/tow hitch, to get the overall length.

I have just ordered an Avan, and their website and brochures tell you the 'external body length', interior body length, and what they call 'total garage length'.

There is about 4 feet difference between the 'external body length' and the 'total garage length' in the one we ordered, (12'11" - 17 ft).

Hope this is of some help, Dave

Well we have a 754 which is supposedly 24ft 6in

It is 23ft or 7015mm INSIDE and outside is 7500, the total length is almost 30ft or 9.450 mt roughly

That is from rear of spare tyre to front of tow hitch, 9280 without spare.

Depends on the manufacturer. A lot use outside because it makes it sound bigger.

Our Roadstar was described as a 21ft 6 but was only 19ft inside.

I think you're right Graham. Bit like fishermen, LOL, caravan owners/manufacturers sometimes exagerate. You know, big is better LOL. I was told also it is usually the inside cabin measurement length.

Most of them seem to be going for the internal, furniture or floor length. It sucks the unwary into towing something bigger than they wanted to.

Bushtracker, for example, will tell you that their 18' (18 foot = 5.4m) has an overall length of 73m.

Hope this helps,
DickyBeach.

My BT (and I'm mixing Imperial & Metric here) is 20 feet of floor. The 1 foot or so of overhang over the spares gives 21 ft of internal space but it is still referred to as a 20 footer. Overall length is 8.3 metres, tow hitch to tail lights.

Yes Fred,
And can you imagine how easy it is to reverse with the wheels being SO far from the back of the truck.
Jokes aside, I obviously "lost" the decimal place somewhere - should have appeared as 7.3m. Sorry about that slip.

Hi all,
I think that Avan says they do not add the boot length into the sum either. That way it all gets to be in the eye of the beholder. Another win for the caravan manufacturers. No standard system and they can say what they like.

Just of 41 years ago we managed to put a man on the moon and since then we have not been able to get a uniform standard.

We have all sorts of trouble in caravan parks trying to explain how long the caravan is. It is kedron and with the long draw bar it equates to a much longer van. The tow truck and caravan are together 56 feet long. This is just 2 feet shorter than a semi trailer. Try backing this onto a powered site. Caravan parks have not understanding.

When the caravan park asks me how long my van is I give them the understood van size i.e. 16ft and also give them the total length.

For Licensing purposes "overall" means just that. From one end to the other.
