Hi
I am setting up a dual battery system in the back of a 2003 rodeo dual cab. I need to run wiring from under the vehicle into the rear tray (not aluminium tray). It is also fitted with a plastic tub liner and canopy just to make things more difficult. I anticipate that I will have to drill holes through the metal floor and plastic liner and would use a vacuam cleaner to remove the metal shavings as i go. Has anyone done this before that can suggest the best location for the holes and the easiest way to do it.

Thanks Kc

hi
there are 2 rubber grommets, one each side of the front wall of the tub, near the cargo anchor points . they would be hidden by your tub liner. if you can take your liner out it would make it easy. you would only need to drill your liner.
i ran my cables along the top side of the chassis rails and cable tied it to the existing factory wiring.
good luck

yep thats the best way to do it and theres a caged nut on the chassis directly below the tub/body join to attach your earth wire, all you need is a 6mm metric bolt/washer,saves you money and time not having to run the earth lead back to the battery, mines been there for 5 years and no dramas,
have fun

Thanks Everyone this is great info. If I have to remove the liner... any suggestions and also would this earth point be suitable for carrying 50amp on the circuit as in the future a 200amp agm battery may be fitted. I presently have a 200A agm in my vehicle and 50 amps in about the max charginjg rate obtained with my system using 8mm diam wire for the full circuit.

hi kc
yes the earth point would be satisfactory to handle the current of your alternator, however the "purists" would recommend a seperate earth cable running back to the main battery to minimise voltage drop etc. mine has been running fine using a good earth to the chassis, just make sure its a nice clean connection and sufficient lugs etc.
cant help with removing the liner as i dont have one, but i reckon removing it would pay off and give you better access to the factory grommets without drilling extra holes all over the place and putting your own grommets in.

Hi
I climbed under the car tonight, located the grommets but with the liner fitted, it is a no go. To remove the liner I would also have to take off the canopy, so it looks like I will go through the floor. Thanks everyone for the help!!

Awesome advice guys, I've just put down a deposit on an RA 05 tdi with 107k on the clock and he had his cable go up between the wellside and the cab and drilled through the canopy, lucky it was only to tiny holes for an underside positive connection to an average dual battery set up. I knew there must be a better way. Can't wait to get it home and get into the all nooks and crannies.

Just make sure if your going to drill through the body to run the wires that they are protected from rubbing on the metal edges, you can buy that plastic ribbed stuff from supercheap, if you can go through the grommet/s as mentioned above all the better. I redid my neighbours sisters hilux, how it never cought on fire I think had just been luck, no wire protection from going into tub and not even a fuse on it, obviously hadnt done any corrugated roads. hi kcandco.
when i was putting the battery's in my last ute the tub liner restricted the tie down plates to be fixed properly and safely to the ute floor, in the end it had to go the tub liner that is.cheers bill.

Hi KC

I have a D-MAX (same arrangement as Rodeo). When OL fitted the tub liner and second battery they mounted it right up the front. IMHO, DON'T DO THAT.

When I later fitted my Outback drawer system I had to remove the tub liner and relocated the battery to behind the N/S wheel arch. This is directly under the Outbacks side cover. Just use a battery hold down system and bolt it through the floor.

I have also mounted a power box (20A ammeter and three power outlets - available from 12V shop in Adelaide) just inside the tailgate. I also fitted an Andersen plug from that battery to a point under the middle of my number plate. 7 pin plug was mounted above rear bumper (had to drill a large hole) which saves having to climb under the vehicle to hook power to the caravan.
