I am looking to go to Tassie is late Jan to early Feb 2011 and was looking for some location should be on the must to do list. We will be flying over and hiring a car once over there, possibly a 4x4 if needed but that depends on where we are to visit.

There is one place that rarely seems to get mentioned when people ask this question and that is Ben Lomond National Park. I would recommend it to anyone. The views are spectacular. The road up to the top leading to the alpine village is a good wide unsealed safe 2wd, or it was when I was there five years ago, but just the look of it from either the top or the bottom would frighten some people. One tourist brochure I read said it was not for the faint hearted.

The way in is not all that far out of Launceston in an easterly direction

Luckily Tasmanian friends took us so were used to the drive. With an F250 it took a 3 point turn on at least one of the switchback corners O:

Hi Vern & Leanne

Our favourites are in a series of blogs in My Blog (look in 2006). Agree Ben Lomond NP is worth the drive (er climb). Fantastic island with so much to see.

Hi Verne and Leanne,

You can have a look at our blogs that cover a trip to Tassie a few years ago. The basic features will not have changed much though roads and accommodation etc may have changed a bit.

But really - help us to help you by giving us a few clues in your question. For example how long are you going for, what are some of the places that you think you might like to see so we can get some idea of what your interests are eg its not much good listing great fishing places if you're not into fishing, or national parks if you'd rather be shopping. (end of rant!)

Tassie is a wonderful place to visit with so much to see, so if your time is limited you need to focus on the things that interest you.

I doubt that a 4WD is necessary but again depends on your preferences.

Enjoy your trip

Val.
