know the feeling, i dont like the "avarage" foamy and if you get a good one it is just to bulky so the next step is an air matteress and everyone so far is to thin or not of any quality ................. i like comfort and there is a lot of "self inflating" things and so on but they dont cut it for me .....
So after looking for some time i am starting to look at
water bed mattereses wondering if you can pump them up with air, they are very strong and meet all my "ticks" ........

Mine is similar but if you buy a softer foam, you may find your hips hitting the floor of the tent. A thicker mattress may not allow the tent to close properly.

Hi esarby
We just purchased a good quality 'egg crate' type foam mattress pad from Pillow talk I think it was, made a huge difference. We got the queen and cut to suit and just sit it ontop of the original mattress.

Hi,
Well I have to add one for the egg crate ( ripple foam) overlays. we have a Jayco eagle and the mattress had softened a bit and my hip was just touching the base , but bought a double foam and cut to fit,
we have found it to be very good now , and the top will still close Ok with the foam in place.
Cheers Des.

Dont restrict yourself to just looking in
camping stores. Have a look at bedding manufacturers and also Clarke Rubber. It may be possible to get a piece of foam that suits your needs and either make a cover (not difficult) or have someone make a cover for it.
Cheers,
Val

Thank you for all your suggestions. My mail problem is that I sleep for about two hours and wake with aching hips and back pain. I was thinking of the Egg Shell foam to soften the top of the mattress or replacing with an pump up air mattress.
I think it will be trial and error. Cheers Steve.

I have just fitted a composite mattress from these guys to the camper trailer.
http://www.latexmattress.com.au/latex-composite-mattresses
The standard foam mattress that came with it lasted less than 4 years, which would equate to maybe 10 weeks full time use before you were lying on the hard bed base.
I have just spent a week at
deepwater NP sleeping on the composite mattress and there is NO comparison between it and any other foam or air mattress.
The down side is weight and initial expense, but how much is a good nights sleep?
I tried their full range of low and high density foam and you guessed it the expensive one won, it has a 10 year warrenty.
It can also come with a variety of cover materials, cotton, tercel and bamboo, with cotton the std covering.
Not for everyone due to cost, if that is the prevailing requirement, but
well worth consideration if you are traveling a fair bit and like a good nights sleep.
No affiliation ect just a satisfied customer.

WE had our local canvas man cut another peice of foam the exact shape of the original foam mattress & placed it underneath the existing one. Made a huge difference.Trick is to pay for good quality/ high density foam. Plus we put a eggshell on our caravan bed & its 5 star.

Hi Esarby, we have a self inflating mattress in the swag and roll it up every dayits great to sleep on. And I second the eggshell, Clark Rubber have a queen size for around $170 if you are interested, they have different density in them too so you can gauge your comfort.

Hi Esarby
We used to have a camper trailer with foam mattress. No good for hips and back. I purchased a laytex overlay from Clark Rubber (queensize) $210.
Have since bought an older caravan (25 years old) with original single bed mattresses intact, cut the laytex down the middle and put ontop of the single bed mattresses, covered with a fitted sheet and bobs your uncle.
No bottoming out for this little camper.
Regards
Dede
