Using Digital Maps & Mapping Software Feedback

An update - Geoscience Australia have now released the NATMAP Digital MAPS 100K DVD with all their available 1:100,000 topographic raster maps. They sell it at their Symonston ACT HQ for AUD$40.00. It uses the same viewing software that comes on the NATMAP Digital maps 250K (not included on the 100K DVD)

I recently purchased a copy. The 100k maps (where available) are merged with the 250k maps. Quality is not that good, and some of the 100k ones don't match up that well with the 250k where they meet.

Still useful though if you are in areas covered by the 100k maps. My preference would have been to just have the 100k maps on their own on DVD; then just pick and choose as needed. That way we probably would have ended with a better quality digital map.

Hi all,

Just to add on to Stephen's reply, i have purchased this product and put it to the test.

The 1:100,000 coverage is not Australia wide - mainly on the more populated areas. Where 1:100,000 coverage is not available (ie. inland Australia), Geoscience Australia have substituted the 1:250,000 maps - so you get whole coverage of Australia, but at different scales depending on what are you're looking at.

The product is split into fours maps: SN/NT, WA, QLD and South East. Each map is a mosaic of smaller maps which make up a region.

If you're after a cheap way to get full coverage of Australia (albeit at different scales), then spend the $40 and get this product. It's also available from most map shops around the place (we have two main ones in Adelaide).

Personally, i found the 1:100,000 maps to be pretty "old looking", i'm not sure when the 1:100,000 maps were produced, and i'll be using the NATMAP 1:250,000 product instead, using things like digital HEMA and digital street directory maps (e.g Fullers or UBD) where more detail is required.

Waiting on the next release of the NATMAP 1:250,000 product, but it's hard to know when as Geoscience don't have a regular release cycle.

It's shame to see many of the Geoscience Australia 1:250,000 and 1:100,000 maps becoming outdated, there just doesn't seem to be the money being put into mapping. Seems to be left to the private sector (e.g. HEMA) and the various state agencies to keep the more detailed mapping going.

Safe Travels,

Nick

Hi discussed briefly last month....

NatMap 100K

Cant argue with the price despite relative poor quality. You can never have too many maps :)

Cheers

PS

Re: Viewing software - they are ecw format so you can import the into all commonly used gps mapping/GIS software programs (OziExplorer, Trackranger, GlobalMapper, Arcview etc...assume MemoryMap ?).

Cheers
