Hey everyone,
With more and more devices now charging off 5 volt USB plugs has anyone come up with something better than a mass of lighter sockets.
What I am thinking is replacing one of the sockets with multiple USB outlets, problem is finding the right little transformer to supply a stable 5 volts and the correct way to solder up the female USB ports.
Would powering an USB hub work or would they vibrate to bits?

Thanks,
Nick

A transformer won't do you much good in this endeavour. They only work with AC supply voltages.
There are however regulator adapters available that will do this.

This is a cigarette lighter plug with 4 USB sockets in it.

Probably the simplest and cheapest way out. Some usb devices need to see a usb data line active to start charging; ie, just 5v at the usb socket is not enough.
An mp3 player I have won't show it charging on the display, but it still charges.
Anyway, it's so cheap, it's worth a try. DealExtreme is a good company to deal with - free postage, and about 10 day delivery from HK.

Hi Nick

I have purchased quite a few of these as gifts for family and friends. Auto-car charger DC Power-USB Multi charge cable. Just search multi usb charger at ebay. We use one in the car and one in the van and another one at home. Yes it does charge more than 1 item at a time. You can also purchase a 240v plug that the usb end attaches into for in the house and van etc.

I hope this link works.

This is a neat little USB charger and power pack. Has a battery built in for times when you don't have AC etc. Not a hub but useful nevertheless.

I bought a two cig and two usb plug adaptor from one of the tec stores and hard wired (with fuse) into my second battery.

Because i have two young kids i went one further and bought 2 x multi head usb cables (dick smith or ebay). One cable can fit a DS, Iphone, MIcro USB plus others i don't use.

I then plug in two iphone/ipod, 2 x ds and 2 x usb devices and charge while driving (i know it takes longer), but everything is charged when we arrive at camp.

Thanks everyone,
What I ended up doing is buying 2 multi socket thingys off Zazz today, each one gives 3 lighter sockets and an USB outlet. Hopefully I can do something with that lot...
