Hi, staying three days in the
Longreach area, could anyone recommend a caravan
park or maybe a station stay. Thanks

I prefer to stay in
Ilfracombe. Much friendlier
park.

Peter D beat me to it.
We stayed at the Thompson River
free camp 4 kms from
Longreach for a couple of days, but went on to stay at
Ilfracombe CP anyway because everyone said it was so good. Thoroughly recommended.

The
free camp Motherhen mentioned, 4 kilometers out of town is quite good. Dusty in the wind and if it is going to rain, the black soil turns to mud quickly.
You did not say if you have kids. You can get 60 caravans there so safety is good. There is only one
toilet block as
well.

We stayed at the Gunnadoo Caravan
Park in Thrush St just on the town side of the Stockman's Hall Of Fame back in 2006. The
park was ok for us. I think it may have changed names to Discovery Holiday Parks -
Longreach. We certainly enjoyed the bush poets that entertained us by the campfire.

We stayed at the Discovery a month ago...was OK. Clean, quiet and good facilities.
OP failed to state what sort of accomodation they're after. FYI.....We stayed in ensuite cabins over looking the
Caltex servo.

Have stayed in a cabin (Dec 1999) & Caravan (July 2009) at Discovery and found both visits very pleasant & staff very nice.

I have stayed in both parks in
Longreach, and I am not rapt in either.
They both get extremely crowded during the tourist season, and they pack em in like sardines in the small
park.
The larger
park near the Stockman's Hall of fame IMHO is better but is pretty barren if it gets hot. As you look at the verdant vegetation at the SHOF , you become envious of the shade as little effort seems to have been made to plant trees. Aside from that it is quite good with clean facilities and a welcome pool.

If you decide to stay at Illfracombe its only a short drive to the big smoke [
Longreach] , ask if Hannah is doing some of her bush poetry , " Grandma and the snake" will have you in stitches.

I think you can also stay at the Showgrounds, not cheap but same as the other parks. The
free camp on the river is disgraceful, last time there the
toilet block was out of action due to fire damage.
Agree with other posts that
Ilfracombe is a far better bet.
Cheers
