I think it is illegal (in qld at least) to drive a vehicle with towing mirrors attached when not towing. I think I have seen the answer on here but all my searches failed to unearth it. Can someone give me the answer please?

Yep, saw it somewhere, I think the basics of it are that the mirrors exceed the maximum width for a vehicle without a trailer. You can have a mirror that extends 150mm beyond the width of the Vehicle, or the Combination. So if you have no trailer on the combination is less so the mirrors may be illegal.

When not towing a mirror or anything else may not stick out from your car more than a certain distance Maybe 150mm Not sure but yes you can get pinged for leaving them on when not towing and not having them when you are towing
Thats why the F250s have retractable mirrors.
This rule covers all aspects of it 14.4.2 covers width allowable

When towing
It is a requirement everywhere to be able to see clearly down BOTH sides of your rig.
Should a cop stand behind your van and stick his fingers out from behind it and you cant see them in your mirrors when rig is lined up straight you could
well be in trouble.

Yes, got pulled up the other day travelling from
Adelaide to
Port Augusta. I dont use towing mirrors, just the rear view camera on the caravan. Have a great view down the road.
The MC cop who pulled me over said he had to give me a caution because at this stage the legislation hasnt caught up with technology. Alan.

Maybe you do but what if someone was standing right at the back of your van near the edge where your camera couldnt see them.
Back up and they would be like the guy in
Brisbane last night. DEAD
Those who think that a camera is a substitute for mirrors are deluding themselves.
Technology hasnt improved things and the only substitute for mirrors would be side view cameras such as some rigs have.
I sincerely hope you now have some mirrors.
Saw lots of rigs when on our lap, travelling blissfully along at about 75 kph cars bum dragging on the ground no wide mirrors and about 10 or more behind them that they had no idea of their existence.
Absolute idiots, there is no other word for it and no excuse either.
