Could someone please tell me if the rear 12v socket is ok for a Waeco or Engel fridge. Is it a matter of just replacing the socket or should the wiring be upgraded.
Thanks Michael

Hi Michael,

I ran my 50lt Waeco off the rear plug briefly and didnt have any problems with it. However, the plug in my 06 Prado goes off when I swtich the ignition off, so not an ideal situation. I had a second socket put in running directly to the other battery and works for me. Alan

Michael.

I would suggest that the factory wiring is not up to carrying the load

I have run a separate positive and negative circuit from my auxiliary battery using 6mm wire to a Baintech Surface Mount Socket with an inline fuse in the engine compartment

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Cruiser

Buy a RAPS12 from waeco and install it and you wont have ANY trouble.

We have done a full circuit with our Waeco 60 in the back of the Cruiser and run off the old model Raps12 which has a switch for always on or only when ign is on.

Easy to install and foolproof.

Should have said its about $112 and they are having a factory sale this

Saturday so go to Waeco and the" seconds" page and see what you can get

and no the factory wiring is NOT heavy enough for a fridge and have seen them heated up and burnt out.

Only good for a worklight or similar light load.

I'll second fitting a product like the Waerco RAPS12, for us it was money well spent as I haven't heard of any 4WD which will run Waecos like ours with the ignition turned off for long.
I remembering reading an article about the Bainbridge product and it looked superior to the Waeco product (Voltmeter from memory was part of the pack).

However if you don't plan on requiring the fridge to riun for more than 30 minutes with the ignition turned off, no you don't need one.

At the time of the fridge install I had new cables run direct from the aux battery. It stays powered up all the time and had a separate socket fitted directly under the std one so I leave a versa light plugged in all the time.
Just flick the switch at night and do not have to fumble around putting the plug into the socket.
The beer is always cold.

we did the Simpson and Strzelecki with our 40litre Engel plugged into the 12 v socket in the back of our 95 series Prado - no problems encountered

Yeah, the Engels are great - will still operate as low as 9V with their "soleniod" motor. But the Weaco are a rotary compressor fridge and low voltages will damage the compressor, hence the low voltage (~12V) cutout they all have.

Its a source of frustration with many owners when run off thin wiring like in a Prado (or most other OEM vehicle power sockets), they find an Engels works fine off the OEM socket but not a Weaco.

Cheers

It will do the job, but not as good as a proper plug , like a merit plug or similar and some thicker wiring. First thing i did to my Prado was fit a 2nd plug in the rear with some 50A cable . Never missed a beat all around Oz.

i also agree with the RAPS units. They are available at BCF, RAYS OUTDOORS etc and 4wd shops etc. Very easy to fit, purpose built for waeco fridges, have 2 sockets, use the hella fitting by removing the red tip off plug. Its also easily transferrable to another vehicle if you sell, like i have just done from my 90 series to 120 series prado. since fitting fridge runs no worries, cheers....

Waeco will draw 5 amps when cycling normally or 7 amps when on boost.
Engel will draw 2.8 amps. (Engel cycles more often).

The Waeco has a low voltage cutout (3 settings) while the Engel will simply stop working at 10 volts.

The Prado's socket is rated at 120 watts for both front and rear together as they are on the same circuit - so max of 10amps for both sockets (some people find this is optimistic)

Put all that together and for a Waeco, I'd add better wiring, and for an Engel its not necessary.
