Hi Guys,

Have just ordered my first Ozi Explorer package (Thanks ExplorOz) I have a small laptop that I was going to use but the boss said that as I use this for my accounts that I should go get something that I can use just for the Nav,
What do recommend ?.
My through was to get the smallest one I can as long as it meets min requirement's and has a DVD drive. what do you guys use and if you could also give me some ideas as to how you mount the laptop in the cab while driving or do you put it on the passengers lap, so they can navigate,

Hi Andrew, I started with a 15" laptop on a home mede mount and found the screen size great but it took up too much room so I picked up an Acer 10" from Harvey Norman on special for $198 and it fits a lot better.

I just carry a portable hard drive with all our maps and download the maps we need in the area we are travelling.

I'm not sure how to post pic's of our mount, let me know your email and I can send some through.

A 10" or 11" Asus eeepc is a good bet. I currently use an Acer travelmate with a 12" screen but it's a little heavier than I'd really like.

Hi Andrew
If you only want one for real time Navigation is there any reason why you need the DVD Drive? If you copy and drag and drop via a reasonable size flash drive you can transfer and install any programme that you want to run on your small netbook, including Ozi and the Natmap series of maps.

I have been using for a number of years now a little Toshiba Netbook. Prior to this we had the 15" in the front of the cabin, but it took too much room up. As you can see from my below picture, the netbook is small enough to fit on top of the centre console, out of the way yet very easy to see if I have to.

Andrew,

I use a Dell Latitude ATG D630 laptop which a bit exxy however I use it for a whole host of things apart from Ozi including:
Street navigation.
Web access/emails using the phone as a modem.
MP3 player.
Backing up images.
Writing trip reports as I travel.

This is the setup:

Like you suggested , My partner just kept it on her lap ( hence the name laptop ) that way she would navigate , and i would concentrate when it was needed ON THE ROAD and not the laptop

we has a bluetooth gps on the dashboard ( which would recharge by solar ) and a bluetooth dongle in the laptop ( new laptop does not need this )

we drive manual 4x4's so it is impractical to put in these silly looking pc holders...

remember the road is the thing you should be looking at - not a rolling screen next to you

We just use our Camps Australia book (with Hema Road Atlas) in combination with the big green signs.

In towns/cities we just use Google Maps on the laptop (lookup route before travelling, memorise it).

When we did Cape York we just bought the Hema map for Cape York.

Few wrong turns, but you find some interesting places that way :)
