From Jan 1st I have 8 weeks off, taking the family to Tassie towing a Rapid.

I live in WA near Perth.

Question is..how long should I spend in Tassie....or else where????

1. Two weeks cruising to Melbourne then 4 weeks Tassie then 2 weeks to get home. 2/4/2 (is my current choice)

2. Three weeks cruisin around then tassie 3 weeks then 2 to get home.. 3/3/2

3. 4/3/1

4. 1/3/4

I guess the question is...how much time do i need to see the main features of Tassie without rushing it???????????

Or what??

look forward to your opinions and suggestions.

cheers

We spent 2 months there and missed a lot of places.

So your 4 weeks sounds like a reasonable amount of time.

sooo what would i do ?????
5 days to Melb via the Nullabour.... 2 weeks is a lot of time from Perth to Melb and you wont be able to go through the "middle" (west-east) as it will be to wet ..... and gunna be very hot out on the Nullabore
3 weeks in Tassie........
Melb, Adeilade n up to Alice and to Darwin to visit it in the WET SEASON, best time of the year to visit Darwin trust me....
Accross the top to Broome and down the coast back to Perth ...
But that is me, as you say "just do it" ...
Cheers

I like your think'n Joe...and would love to see Darwin in the wet. Trouble is I don't see any time for relaxing in the timeframe i have if I followed your advice. A lot of driving involved in that trek. And I have 3 kids in tow...they need some fun..

Might have to save Darwin for the dry season and do the top in July...

hey we have 3 kids ... 3yrs, 7yrs, 9yrs ...... they dont mind driving as long as it is comfortable and some very wise advise ......... get good quality DVD players with the wirless headphones .......
The way we do it is plan on the first run to cover as many ks as possible, the kids get very bored after the second day but fine on the first, remember you can cover 12-1500 klms safely in a good day even with kids .....
We did 5 weeks and 12000 klms, yes was hard and learnt a lot .... DVD players RULE, dont kid yourself that the kids will be interested in seeing all the sights out the window, they are after all only kids and it dont mean a great deal to them, they remember the stops well but never the trip, take a ball, every stop run around like crazy and it works wonders ....

Ours are 8, 12, 14. We're not new to travel...been all the way around the paddock except NT and Tassie. hence tassie this trip. Have spent upto 3 months on the road before so I got a few ideas, just haven't done with a comfey van before. I know Tassie will be awesome but I'd like to see other stuff as well, like a revisit to the Otway NP or maybe the Vic high country....there's just too much to see and not enough time...what a hassle hey! :-)

Having spent 4 weeks in Tassie with a camper trailer I would cut your return travel to Perth and give yourself another week in Tassie as I did over 4000kms. touring around and still didn't see all I wanted. It is a great place but Iwould reccomend going in Jan. or Feb.

Tassie is magnificent in Winter. Days are shorter but usually sunny and way less tourists!

Royce,
Have to agree. We just had our first winter in tassie and everyone warned us how bad it would be. I can tell you it was a lot better than the winter in vic. We had no where near the rain. While my mates were stuck in side I was out fishing. Tassie is not as bad as averyone says, in fact it is way better, just don't let everyone in on our secret lol.

Hi Andrew,
I would leave Darwin for another trip. Yes you could do as above but you wouldn't see much. We spent 3 yrs on the road and often only travelled 200-300 km a day.
I think your first plan is ok. As mentioned you can spend a long time in Tassie.
I guess you can be flexible and change as you go. If 2 weeks from Perth to Melb is too long coming over then stay an extra week in Tassie and take 1 week going home.
Most people rush and miss so much. I guess it depends on what interests you. We took 2 weeks across the nullabour and had a ball, that was with 2 kids aged 5 and 7. There is heaps to see if you look.
We spent 3 months in Tassie for time round then 11 weeks second time round and now live here.

Should have mentioned our girls were 3 and 5 when we left. We never had a dvd player in the car. They read books, draw pictures of what they saw to send home or looked out the window at this amazing country. We played games like spot the dingo, camel etc. They were very interested in the landscape. Stop regulary to get out and have a look around. Across the nullabour we looked at the blow hole, put our feet in the southern ocean and looked at ruins. There is alot out there to look at when you take the time.

another thing...I'd like the flexibility of getting on and off the boat when ever I want but thought I'd better book in advance...don't want to miss out.

Being a local do you know any different??? can I wing it and still get on the board...I'm not so sure???

Hi Andrew

Your last question - six weeks minimum.

Suggested time frame for your eight weeks - 10 days getting there and 6 days racing home would give you almost six weeks there.

We took two weeks to get to Melbourne so as to see a few places along the way and be sure of getting there in time. We booked seven weeks for a quick look around, which allowed for a few days with friends. As it was so expensive getting there, we wanted to see a good selection so six to seven weeks was a bare minimum. Lots more we had to pass by. What we saw is shared in My Blog dated 2006.

Hi Andrew,

Im with Motherhen. Its quite expensive to get to Tassie with a van so suggest that you spend as much of your available time as you can over there. There is a lot to see. Even if you have 6 weeks there you wont see all of it. Your kids are a good age for enjoying more active things like hiking climbing etc so they should have a ball.

Our blog on out Tassie trip in 1997 is here:
Site Link
The things that we saw then wont have changed much in the intervening years. Its a 2 part blog - at the bottom of it is a link to click onto the second part.

You could spend 6 weeks in SA and Victoria too but why rush. It will still be there for when you are able to return - but you dont have to add in the cost of a ferry. Make what you do really enjoyable and your children will want to come back.

One suggestion, although it can be quite hot in Tasmania in Jan/Feb the water can be quite cold, so if you have wet suits the kids would probably have more fun in the water.

Have a great trip.

Cheers,

Val

4 weeks at a min we can here in 2002 for three weeks back the next year for eight weeks and i'm still here. book the boat now as there is a waiting list now my partner had to go to mainland 0n the 8th this month and she had a ten day wait to get back. please remember just because it might be 100ks away it could take you 1 to 1.5 hour to do DO not rush just take your time in tassie and you will love it. the roads down here are corners corners and every now and again you will frind a straight, that is unless you travel down the middle.like other people what made me stay here that question will answer itself when you get off the boat. better go now as i have cray to cook and get the fresh fish we caught this morning ready for tea.
I NEVER get lost, but don't i see a lot of NEW places.

If you're going to be driving around northern Tassie (especially around the Launceston area), just watch out for UHF CB Ch02 (a repeater not far from L'ton). There's a very entertaining character who uses this channel and is fun to listen to...hehehehe. He calls himself "The Whisperer."

He does use very colourful language, though.

Cheers.
