Hi We are visiting our daughter in Townsville just prior to Christmas and would like to get some information on a location about fifty to one hundred ks out of Townsville for a day visit.
A bit off the beaten track, by a river or lake, and with nice scenery. Access via a track or gravel road ok. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Paluma (crystal creek) and beyond is the go.

It is possible to go up to Paluma and then head further west and come back down through Hervey Range road. Longish day but great scenery.

Not off the beaten track but still a nice spot for lunch about 1/2 hr nth of Townsville is Rollingstone..either down by the river or at the pub your choice. The river is great for a crystal clear swim and the rest area is a large grassy area ideal for o/night stops and picnics alike. Balgal Beach is on the coast from Rollingstone and also a nice spot but do not swim with the salties here.

You could also drop into Toomulla Beach (not sure on spelling) about 10km sth of Rollingstone. It too has a nice grassy area for o/nighting or picnics and is close to the boat ramp with good fishing in the river and a short stroll from the beach for walks along the beach. I do NOT!!! reccomend a swim here though as salt water lizards would inhabit this system and they bite hard LOL!!

But the pick of them all in my opinion is Bowling Green NP. Only 25km sth of Townsville and again this is a nice shady, grassy spot with a cool refreshing river to swim in. Ideal for a day trip or o/night with good facilities at hand.

Hope you can afford the time to really appreciate what is a wonderful region. (No I am not a local but I do like that region)

Regards, Trevor.

Mt Elliot NP south of Townsville, but it will probably be fairly busy.
A bit further but Wallerman falls are well worth while visiting.

There are heaps of day trips to do around Townsville.

Go to the Burdekin Dam and Ravenswood. Or Charters Towers - plenty of picnic spots by the river north of town provided the school holiday campers have not moved in - then you will not be able to move.

Agree with Paluma, it is normally nice and cool up there.
