Yesterday I had the suspension upgraded on the Land cruiser to Oldman Emu 400kg on the rear Nitrocharger sports for the rear and front, oldman emu torsion bars fitted by Recreational Car Accessories at Wyoming - Gosford.

I was surprised when I picked up the vehicle when the mechanic told me that I will need to get a wheel alignment done.

I have now booked the cruiser into have the wheel alignment done, the mechanic also asked me why they didn't do the wheel alignment at the same time as the suspension conversion. Also on the OME paperwork warranty for it also asks for the wheel alignment info.

I have since looked my other quotes and they did include a wheel alignment and the RCA quote? I know I should have asked the question but correct me if I am wrong if you were having major suspension work completed you would expect the wheel alignment as part of the service. The total job did cost me $1,860.00

I look forward to hearing any feedback?

Hi Shaun

Given you had the OME torsion bars put in as well, one would assume the wheel alignment would have been incorporated in the service.

I would be seriously contemplatingt kaing the vehicle back and asking why this didn't happen.

Cheers

Yes I would have to agree? it was not in the quote but you would think it would just be part of the whole service?

Thanks Shaun

IFS have different characteristic than my live axled cruiser, however, i was told it was pointless getting a wheel alignment done until after i had done 2000 ks to allow the suspension to settle.
My cruiser was a real handfull after I put new heavy duty coils in the front(and back), but came good with out the need of castor correction bush's after awhile

Why spend $$$ getting steering geometry right NOW only to have it go out later.
If it "feels" alright for now I would wait for for coupla '000 ks and then get it done, I found a heavily rutted track and spent a bit time deliberately crossing up my axles, to work my springs in.

I have no answer why they didn't mention wheel alignment to you and I would have also assumed that if was paying that sort of coin that the wheel alignment WAS done

short answer .... get it done ASAP and get it done again after 20,000klms....
Tyres are to expensive to screw up, once they start to wear you wont stop it and also it WILL be a pig to drive .......
who pays is up to you i guess .... any suspension changes to the front will alway require the wheel alignment re doing and in most cases WILL be at an extra cost
Cheers

Hi Joe

Took the car to an independant Tyre wheel alignment mechanic, he could not beleive that RCA did not do a wheel alignment after changing the suspension over, he said it would be like putting on new tyres without balancing them.

He said the wheels were towing in, he has ajusted, now it drives 100% better. I have sent an email off to the sales person at RCA about my disappointment with them not completing the wheel alignment. I look forward to hearing the response from Recreational Car accessories?

I might give OME head office a call and ask for their opinion?

Thanks

Shaun

(1) I take it that your quote from RCA did not include a wheel alignment.

(2) If this is the case dude it doesn't matter how much you paid as you were supplied the goods & service quoted on. If there is anything deficient in either of these two aspects then you have an avenue of redress.

I know this doesn't/won't make you feel any better , but I reckon the reason that RCA didn't include it in the quote is that they don't have a wheel alignment facility and for whatever reason don't outsource it.

I personally know of one 4WD business that installs suspensions amongst other things and it does not have a wheel alignment facility in it's workshop. As to whether or not they outsource this service or advise the customer to get it done themselves, I can't comment on as I don't know.

It would have been nice though for RCA to inform you personally, or have highlighted this requirement on your part, on their subject quote so that you could have made a better informed decision.

A good, modern wheel alignment machine is an expensive investment which you would want to have operating 6-8 hours a day. Not doing 2 or 3 aligments after suspension fits. Therefore, you'll probably find that alot of 4wd shop will outsource there alignment work.
There is nothing wrong with that practise, and infact i think it's a good idea as a front end specialist will sometimes pick up a fault that a general mechanic might not.

Either way, if it wasn't in the quote then i don't see you have any financial re-course, however i would be good to inform the company that their practice of telling people they need an alignment AFTER the work is complete isn't really satisfactory.

I have now had the wheel alignment done by a specialist, the car performs 100% better than when I picked up after the suspension upgrade. The mechanic said they should have done the wheel alignment as it is like getting new tyres fitted without getting them balanced.

RCA are in the same complex as Brian Hilton Toyota the largest Toyota dealer on the central Coast, I would imagine that they would have access to a wheel alignment equipment?

Its a shame that you are not told about this before work is carried out? you need to go through each quote with a magnifying glass. You assume that these 4X4 stores are the experts and one stop shop to get all your work done?

I am happy with the job now after the wheel alignment, its given me 90mm lift, On the weekend I will hook up the caravan and reset up the hitching height and sway bars.

Thanks for your reply's

Shaun,

In 2004 when I had my suspension installed by the "other 4WD" place in Gosford, I was informed that the front end should be aligned after about 500kms of driving to let the suspension settle.

Like you I had the front end aligned within a week, I also had to have it re-done after about 1200kms as it did settle.

I do not think that what RCA did is that unusual, but may be a communications issue.

One thing you should put into your maintenance schedule is to have the front end alignment re-done at least once a year (maximum of 60,000kms) more if you do a lot of off roading. It is not so much the bump - thump that alters the alignments (hard knocks will) but turning when in ruts, mud or in rocky area's.

P.S. Brian Hilton send vehicles out for front end alignments and tyres.

The Manager from RCA has looked and listened to the feedback and has made it policy that they will always do a wheel alignment before a vehicle is given back to the customer after a suspension upgrade.
He has also given us a gift voucher for our inconvenience and feedback.

The cruiser now drives and tows the caravan 100% better with no sag in the rear suspension, I now wish I had this done 12 months ago before our big trip to Darwin.

I have always been happy with the work that RCA have completed on my vehicle, and it is good to see that they have listened to the feedback. I find a number of businesses that just do not acknowledge customers feedback or complaints.
