well is very quite out here now, (Savannah Way ..... Booraloola to Burktown) we have seen probally 3 car/vans through a week for the last 6 weeks and 4wds only about 1-2 a day ........
Yes it is hot but it is the best time to travel, awsome lightining around, yep some very big showers and storms but stay to the "main" roads and you will be fine, went to Lawn Hill 2 weeks ago and only a handfull of people and was really nice, went to Kingfisher Camp and only US for the whole day, sooo serene ......
Guess my point is dont be afraid to travel along the "main" gravel roads at this time of the year, the rain may be heavy at times and small "flash" floods will happen but will go back down quickly and you can continue on, road reports are very accurate at the moment so do check them but it is the BEST time to travel, the BARRA are starting to bite really well and will be found way up in some of the smaller streams, the evenings are reasonable and nights are cool enough to camp still ...... just keep the speed down now as it can be very slipperey when wet but then again, what is the hurry ?????
Enjoy your summer travellers, our wet season, and see you again next dry, be warned it seems it is going to be a big one .....

I bet it does ........ i always reckon the wet is the BEST time of the year. can get a bit hard when we are stuck in one spot due to flooding but even that is very interesting .......
To see first hand how a river can rise from just flowing to 13M deep within a few weeks and rise and fall by 10M in a few days of rain is something worth seeing ........
mind you i guess i have to like it as i live here eh :-)

Hi Joe

I agree it can be great at this time of the year but it is the buildup. There are the downside.

The humidity is at its worst just now. When we lived up there a light tinge of green mould would grow on everything - the walls, the furniture, any leather goods including boots. Everything was constantly damp. The air was so thick with humidity it was like just living in a sauna. The heat is unrelenting going all day and all night.

I still liked it. The sudden lightening storms are just sight to be seen. When it rains it just pours like you won't see elsewhere often getting more than 100mm in 20mins.

As for fishing - I only went out occasionally at this time as the water still was not around enough and it is the peak of the crocodile breading season. This can mean being very careful of those floating handbags as they can get a bit titchy just now.

Even with all this I still liked it.

Cheers

David

really good point about the Crocs .... you can never be to careful .......

When we were living in the Vic River district the wet was awsome, in Jasper Gorge there were waterfalls that appeared from noware and looked incredible, ran for a few days, in the water hole at Jasper you could take the boat up to the base of one of the bigger ones and sit under it or when running hard sit in the spray .......
and "humidity" .... thank god for BEER ....

Hi Guys
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it closed season for barra until 2nd Feb?
Like to think I'm wrong as I love nothing more than chasing barra during the wet and during the runoff
Cheers Ray
