I have just purchased a new aux battery that runs from my redarc dual isolator system.
Seems the solenoid has stopped working and that is what caused the battery to fail.
No charging for some time resulted in almost complete discharge without me knowing.
The unit is just over two years old and therefore out of warranty. New one is about $130.00 or so, too much for my current budget.
My question is this. Is the solenoid much the same as a continuous use solenoid similar to the starting type (short time use only). Checking on the wiring it looks like the black box simply supplys power to the solenoid coil when the voltage triggers the control box.
Has anyone tried to replace the solenoid with another cheaper version?

Simply take the black box off and fit it to one of our continuous duty solenoids. (That is if the box still works - red light on with engine running)

The most common problem is burnt contacts as the surface area is very small, here is a photo of the redarc SBi12 contacts. Once they pit or burn they develop voltage drop and won't supply full voltage to the aux battery.

G'day Pooley,
When mine stopped working, I found it was the earth (thin black cable on mine) did not have a good contact. Fixed that up and no further problems. Going for over 5 years now, so it shouldn't wear out in 2. Might not be the same problem but worth a go.

Never used a Redarc in my system. Just an ordinary solenoid

I pulled it to bits and found evidence of rust in the case. I then found a continuous use unit in my old winch bits and installed it using the $100.00 black box and all is well. Thank you guys.

Thread completed.

As suggested check the earth wire. It is a common cause of problems.

If that does not fix it then contact Redarc via their website. I had had great support from them. My isolator failed whilst overseas and when I returned to Aus it was well out of warranty. They told me to send it in and after checking it and a friendly chat over the phone they replaced it.

cheers

Should add that they have a new version of the SBI and I suspect it has overcome a few issues.
