I have a 98 rodeo with a 4JBIT diesel engine that has a just had a timing gear failure & was wondering if this is a common problem with this motor.

Yep, Sure was if they didn't go through the recall to make sure the Harmonic Balancer didn't come loose and let everything else on the end of the crank float around.
