Guys, I live on the Gold Coast and have 3 weeks forced leave coming up in January, fully self sufficient Patrol tourer setup, question is where to go for three weeks?

The cape is out because of the wet, Uluru/Kata Tjuta/Olgas is one of the places we desperately want to go but again its the wrong time of year I guess, has anybody been in Jan is it out of the question, heat, flies, etc? Will this year be any different with the wet weather we have been having?

Assuming the centre is out anybody got any good ideas for a 3 week extended trip from the Goldie?

Hi Roy
This years weather patterns have really turned the "Red Centre" into the "Green Centre". My sister lives in Alice Springs and it is still so green and lush up there. The most noticeable thing apart from the Green is the temperatures.

This time of the year they should have had day after day of 40C plus temperatures. Sure they have had a few 36C days but for that part of Australia it has been quite cool with some days still in the mid to high 20's.

Play it by ear and if it is hot, then head south for some of Australia's best coastal scenery - The Great Ocean Road and head through to the South East of SA and then up through the Riverland and back via Mildura and the Murray.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Have a great trip where ever you venture.

Cheers

Stephen

Hi Roy,
Our last big trip to the centre was Christmas thru new year. It did get warm at times (mainly between the cliffs in Boggy Hole in Finke Gorge NP) but cooled off in the evenings. There were definately not as many people around exept for tour groups.
I think it was the best visit I have had there and as said earlier the area is lush atm. Worth the run.

Dave,

Having never been out that way I know the flies can be a pain but what were the Mozzies like? I seem to be reading differing reports from none to fierce?

I don't remember either of them being a problem but it would have been a couple of weeks later. It had rained for 2 weeks and stopped when we were there and started again when we left. We were the 1st vehicles thru Boggy Hole after the rain, the water was 4" up the windscreen and the flood washed sand in the Finke was a bugger to pull the trailers through. Top trip though.

Thanks guys, after Stephen and Dave's comments its tipped us over the edge to go to the centre (didn't need to much persuading). I think it will be worth it to catch some of the green, the next trip might be back to normal (weather wise) so it would be all new, might not get chance to see it green again!

Now to figure out what to put on the itinerary, three weeks from the Gold Coast doesn't seem long enough, I'm not sure what is achievable in that in that time from here. Don't mind hotfooting it out or back but dirt/sand is the go where possible, want to get in Uluru just cos you have to :) the rest were flexible.

Any suggestions welcome bearing in mind the time available?

With January temps in the mid to high thirties it wont be the most comfortable time to be touring the centre & in 6 weeks the green may well be red. "hotfooting it" is exactly what you will be doing ;-)
Keeping to the coast or High Country would give better respite from the heat.
Have a great trip.
Cheers Craig.............

Anybody got any tips on the best way from the Goldie to Alice? I want to get out there sharpish (not waste to much time) but need some nice camps/things to see on the way, also an estimate of how long and where to stop? Not asking too much am I LOL
