Brake controller wiring

I am fitting a Hayes Lemmerz Energize III Brake Controller to my 2007 Holden Rodeo twin cab. I intend using 6mm wire to plug and battery. However the existing cold side brake light wire is very thin, (1.8mm including insulation). Is it necessary to use heavier wire to connect this wire to the controller?
