Hi All,

Just want to make everyone aware of a scam that i nearly fell into.

I posted a for sale ad on the Quokka (WA version of Trading post) and got a response through the website. So i replied and after numerous emails back and forwards, the guy at first said he will organise postage for the parts and requested the transaction be done through Paypal. Fair enough i thought, and after more emails, i asked him to ring me, he then said that he worked on an oil rig and the phone lines were down and could only communicate via email. He wanted these parts for his dad or something. Then it ended up that he was a sailor (so his ocupation suddenly changed?? - first sign) in the UK. This is when i started getting suss. Then he asked me to do a transaction through Western Union, and he wanted to add $430 on top of my asking price but i had to organise this transaction through the post office etc. I then made sure he was aware the parts are in Australia, and told him i was not interested- as it was way too suspect. He then came back to me and tried to explain etc and said yes he knew i was in WA and sent me "a" UK Mailing address. Considering his surname was different to the person he wanted me to mail this stuff too who was suposidly his dad (a bull bar and rear plastic bumper- so would not be feasable or cheap to freight to the UK) i told him no deal!

This has all happened only over the last 3 days.

Anyways, just wanted to make people aware of this. Taking to my mum tonight, she also said she knew someone who was scammed a similar way through a "trading post" type of site.

Hi , yeah lots of dodgy people out there trying to rip you off.
I recently was selling a motorbike on bikesales & had about 50 of these types of emails.. There's a few different stories they come up with but usually they first say what is your best price or will say they will pay your asking price, then for some reason they are overseas or somewhere the opposite to where you are.

Personally if I haven't met the person then I'd want the cash cleared in my bank or paypal account before sending..

Hi Rusty
We had the same thing while tring to sell our van. Sounds like the same person sailor no phone reception but didn't have problems sending SMS. Wanted to pay by pay pal only and to click on his link to paypal. Yer right! Didn't get any more after we told him to get a job and to stop stealing from others.

well i found out what it is all about ...... they are NOT after your parts nor trying to get them cheaper hence this dude offered to "increase" the price ....
It is "Identity Theft" and they are after all of your personal details and now will use an ad in a paper to get it as it gets people to part with the kind of details they need .....
Get the name and run it accross the internet, sometimes it will come up as a scam as they go hard otherwise just dont even bother with anyone that doesent "sound" like they live here or says they dont live here remembering some will say they live here, always will be the furtheret point away from your address so feel free to question them ..... it is your identity .....
Also just check what his e-mail address ends in ...

Seems a bit too common these days. Know a guy who had a couple of break ins. One he lost some papers stolen, the second, all he knew was postioning of gear at the computer, but that was an afterthought.

Turned out his identity had been stolen over the next few days with some spyware on his computer and his bank account raided for his savings including some long term deposits. You have to be able to PROVE it wasn't actually you who then did any transfer. Guilty until proven innocent. The funds went offshore to things I don't believe he would be into.

The other way they do it is they make a fake paypal page. As mentioned in original post he was asked to click the link in the persons email. They say they will have a courier pick up the item. Because they bank with a different bank to the transport company they can't pay them directly. If the item costs $15000 they add an extra $5000 to the price for transport. They make the payment to your paypal account which is the fake one they made up. They send you a fake conformation that the money is in your paypal account. They then ask you to pay the $5000 into the transport companies account(which is their account). Noone picks up the item but you loose the $5000.
We had them try this with our trailer. We rang the police who put us onto the internet fraud department who told us just to tell them to ***off. There is no way to track them as they use Western Union and transactions are untracable.
One guy rang us and knew so much about us as he had checked our website and got info from there. He sounded like my best mate the way he talked until I told him my brother worked for the federal police and I never heard back from him.
You need to be so careul.

Advertise anywhere, including here on EO, and you will get these type of scam responses. They have got more sophisticated recently, using a fake Paypal copy website which looks pretty authentic.

Hi,Rusty,
You did well to alert us to this. I alerted E.O. to a scam that I believe was on E.O. but heard nothing more. I'm not really sure if it was.
I was trying to contact the person via E. O. to avoid picking up this virus again by personally sending an Email to them.
This person was interested in my family history re. Annandale Ruins.
I was trying to be very careful.

I have ill health, my husband has a type of Terminal Leukaemia which will require a Bone Marrow transplant if something better doesn't come up in about 3yrs.
I've just found out that another friend is very , very ill.

I continually wonder what sort of no conscience and no morals these people seem to have and yet they live on.(Quote)" Ned Kelly was a gentleman compared to the likes of some"

Another friend has just had a scammer trying to get into his bank account but the bank alerted him.
A sign comes on your computer that windows has found all these errors. Very convincing.
Then there's the not convincing phone calls after 7pm from overseas!
Truly there is no justice in this world.
Take care, safe travels, Ma.

There are some good tools to help defend yourself against identity theft.

One i use is 'My Veda Alert'. This basically emails me when there is a change to my credit file (as in - applying for more credit)

Most victims of identity theft are unaware of whats going on until its too late.

Hi all just want to let anyone who has a car for sale on the net to beware as I have advertised my patrol on carsales.com.au last Friday and received a email from a person interested:
I get a text email on my mobile from a stepmillen12@gmail.com asking if the car was in good condition and to reply immediately, I thought it was a little strange as he sent a email to mobile ph no so I replied via my gmail it went like this,

Me) Hi Step,
Yes the car is in excellent condition as the ad says it all, It is serviced every 5000km, the only reason i am selling is because I want to buy the new V6 diesel navara in January, I have put a lot of extra's on this vehicle I have owned it since April 2006. If you have any Q ? ring me.

Stephen Millen) Ok
When did you service it last and the final price ?

Me) Last service was done at 145000km by me, Log book service's every 10000km by shop, but I do eng oil & filter, fuel & air filter every 5000km, Iam very particular with my vehicles, If I have to pay 6 months rego due 29th Dec $29500 if you want to pay the rego $29200, just out of interest I have this vehicle currently insured for $40600 agreed value with AAMI including extras, this has only been used as a family car I am in the process of putting the rear seats back in as I have it booked in for RWC tomorrow, I removed them a few yrs ago an built a rear cupboard if you want it.

Stephen Millen) Thanks for the response,i will take it for $30,000 including PayPal surcharges since i am interested in the immediate purchase for my DAD.he just moved to the Malaysia, where this is needed and i will be making use of a shipping company to have this picked up from you and have it delivered to him .Further arrangements will be made with you in regards to the pick up once i have paid you.
I would appreciate if you email me with more pictures (if available) too since i won't be be able to see this in person, what's the PayPal email to send funds to in order for me to pay you ASAP.

Me) Do you have a contact phone number and where are you.

Stephen Millen) Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buying it now for my DAD and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the goods to be a surprise for DAD so i wont let him know anything about the goods until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with the Product. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for the goods and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com.au and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money through. have a pick up agent that will come and pick the goods up after i have made the payments...

This really made me start to think so I asked a little more

Me) Ok but how much is the paypal fees? come out of $30000 AU, Do you have access to ebay? Also I will need more verication of who you are and who would sign the transfer papers?

Stephen Millen) $500 As soon as you send me your PayPal email i will make the payment and you will be notify in your email that the payment have been made.Very easy.

Me) You will need to give me your full name and birth date, your address aswell as your employer's name, address and contact details so that I can have both you & them verified.

Stephen Millen) ok

That was the last email I had received I also googled his name Stephen Millen paypal and another post on gumtree blog Car scam

Sorry for the long post but seller's beware
Cheers hunter

Hi Step,

This used be driven by my wife as I'm always at work :-(.. until I bought a nissan xTrail last month. It drives awesome and never had to repair a thing. Regularly serviced. You can test drive it anytime after 6pm and anytime during the weekend.I've parked it on my friends garage in Marrickville as I only have room for one car at my current house. Any check is welcome. Air-con, power steering everything works.

Thank you
