I would like to update the R66 maps but last time I tried it did not work, I bought and paid for maps that could not be downloaded and the 'sync' application needed to be reloaded.

Many roads have changed and I would like to know if R66 has been updated in the last 10 months since I bought the unit.

If it can be done please let me know how ?

Regards

Derek

Please look at the following 2 pictures to see what I mean.

Brisbane airport has many new roads that show on goo-gle but not on R66.

Hi
Dont know what version maps you have (you dont say) but it looks to me that you just havent zoomed in close enough in Route 66. Secondary roads only appear at high zoom levels. Here is screen shot of the same area you have (nearly) but with many roads (V2010 Q2) - not sure which ones you think are missing but looks pretty much the same as GM.

Hi Derek
If you go to www.66.com and download route 66 sync you will be able to see the maps in there latest form.My opinion is that route 66 is useless for Australia as we have had a new major Hway here in W.A. between Perth and Bunbury open for nearly 2 years and it is still not been added.I have the first hema gps and love it but will not fork out for the new one until hema get decent street mapping. Where is mapping seems to be pretty good over here in the west.
Cheers Stuart.

Hi
Forrest highway has only been open since September 2009 - 1 year 2 months. But nonetheless it should have been included on the next update after that (2010 Q2 ?) as it was no secret. I havent found any other issues with the maps themselves but dont use street mapping that much.

Cheers

I'll second the opinion that R66 is useless for Oz.
I've bought two no name gps/nav units on ebay and both came with both R66 and Igo.
Route 66 is useless and Igo 7 or 8 would have to one of the best nav programs around bar none.
Igo quite often has remote area tracks on it too.
I would have thought that if Hema could get a no name GPS branded with their logo that they would have opted for a far better nav program. If the no name units are available with a choice of two programs for no extra (and free upgrades) then surely Hema could supply several nav programs when they charge more than four times the price.

Hi Peter

Is it possible to remove R66 and replace it with Igo ?

I can't see why not. The Hema like most of the gps units runs windows CE as the OS. The "hema" front end is just a program running on the screen just like firefox or internet explorer does on your pc.
Someone computer savvy should be able to set it up for you.

...are you sure the ebay units have legitimate copies of the Route 66 and Igo. I have heard that many are pirated copies...but not sure if this is universal.

Derek

The latest map for australia is 2009 Q4

I have downloaded maps without problem.

I have the laptop connected to internet and then connect Hema to laptop and then go to the Route 66 store on the navigator and downloaded the map I wanted.

It is a slow download but it worked without any problems.
(I have the first model Hema)

Hi

The current R66 map is actually Australia 2010 Q2 (Version 3.668).

I have one of the early HN5 in that serial number range that the link refers to. As I understand from discussions at Wiluna with Hema rep my HN5 would need to be returned to Hema for Route 66 update.

Unfortunately I have such a low opinion of Route 66 that I cannot see much point in updating it. So likely it will never be updated.

Hi

I also have an early one and carried out the update in the comfort of my own home. I contacted Hema and they emailed me detailed instructions..which used to be on the website as well. They may now do it themselves to eliminate the risk of people going down the wrong path.

Not updating is your descison but you never know they may actually fix whatever issue you have one day...but then maybe they wont.

Cheers

Greg

I like the HN5 for OziExplorer. It does that well and pays its way on that.

Perhaps I should elaborate on my contrary attitude on Route 66.

I have been in a vehicle with two other GPS type street navigators and the HN5 and they absolutely trashed Route 66.

I have had Route 66 do bizarre things like tell me to go south on a main highway instead of north. I use it very occasionally for finding streets within a city but no longer use it for navigation between cities. So as the streets within cities only slowly change an update to get the latest freeways is not relevant to me any longer.

No worries. I wasn’t disputing you have an issue - just pointing out that if you never update there is no chance of it ever being fixed.

I have been very disappointed with Hema's decision to go with Route 66, like others i often find the maps to be inaccurate, poor quality routing, and not what you'd expect to get with a $900+ unit.

Hema Navigator is GREAT for offroad work, but the Street Navigation is dismal. And lets face it, it'd be nice to have good street/highway mapping for those tarmac legs of the journey.

Many people i know have a separate Navman or Tom Tom unit because they can't stand the Hema's street nav. Hema, this should be setting off alarms that your product isn't cutting the mustard. When will you listen to your customers on this issue. Will it take customers to stop buying the product?

The VMS 4x4 Navigator might just start to stir the Hema pot. Have a look at http://www.vms4x4.com to see what you think. I believe this unit used WhereIS map data (one of the most up to date in terms of Australian coverage).

Will be interesting to see where Hema goes in future versions of the Navigator.

I agree, perhaps we can start a signed petition of some kind and then forward it to Fair Trading as the product 'NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE', this may cause a forced recall of the product. It is a BIG problem when HEMA even warn you not to upgrade software on their own website.

Even the ExplorOz shop advertises this...

"Street Navigation - Route 66
The intelligent voice guidance software uses the latest NAVTEQ streets and back roads making it easy to navigate to a street address, your accommodation or another point of interest."

and this...

"The Hema Navigator 5" is designed to complement all aspects of your trip, so whether you're after Street Navigation, Topographic maps, or the best in 4WD mapping, the Hema Navigator will get you there."

So even ExplorOz is doing some false advertising because the product doe snot do as stated.....

Perhaps David and Michelle should start the petition for us.

I don't have space for another GPS on the dash and tend to use google on my iPhone more and more these days.

I agree also,

I am on my third Hema 5 (see thread #82575) and on this trip we tried to use the route 66 for the first time.

What a joke! If we hadn't paid $950.00 for this thing we might be laughing!

'NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE' I will sign your petition.

Steve.
