I'm looking to have a brake controller fitted to my new Prado GXL 150 series. I've had a Prodigy on a previous 4WD and found it quite good, although I kept hitting my knee on it.

The bloke at the towbar centre suggested the Hayman Reece Guardian IQ brake controller. He said it was also made by Teshonka (as is the Prodigy).

Does anyone have any experience with the Guardian IQ controller? I'm looking for any advice you can give on these two units.

Thanks,

Ray

sorry no idea about the Guardian but i fitted my new Prodigy P3 in my prado 120 and positioned it higher up on LHS of steering column to avoid banging it with my knee and it seems to be ok where i put it. It is also easy to see from driving position as nothing blocking vision to it and its easy to reach to activate the manual slide bit.

I just fitted the P3 cradle onto a square dummy switch plate on the dash and when i take the P3 out of car I simply unclip the wiring and toss it up under dash where it sits ok/ doesnt fall down, remove the cradle complete with dummy cover plate and have bought a replacement square dummy switch plate from toyota for about $7 to fill the hole until i want the P3 back in the car.

maybe you can try something similar, i am not sure of 150 layout, but maybe there is a dummy plate higher up somewhere to allow a similar fit. you can see photos of mine for ideas at pradopoint at P3 brake controller - Alternate location for installation

I reckon one of the Tekonsha or Redarcs with the remote head would be the way to go.

The main unit mounts up out of the way behind the dash and the control unit mounts in a standard switch knock out in the dash.

No more knee crunchers.

I just fitted a Redarc remote head controller to my Prado, it was easy to fit & very unobstrusive.

Cannot comment on the Guardian. When we were looking for a brake controller most advise we had was get the Tekonsha P3. I am glad we did. It is very good. We have a Triton and I mounted it in the Ashtray slot. The Tekonsha fits perfectly and easy to reach and change controls. Thanks Ross

Ray,
I have a Guardian fitted in a Cruiser ute, easy to set, no problems at all with the controller although when the brakesafe battery went flat I found I couldn't set the controller to the desired settings. Thought the controller had died but when I replaced the brakesafe battery all was normal again. I wouldn't hesitate buying another.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I've decided to stick with what I know and have bought a Prodigy. Ray
