Hi Tyres are cheaper but price of shipping puts them over here. Unless you know someone with a container coming in its not really worth the effort

If you are thinking of buying the Coopers make sure they are Light Truck tyres. Coopers dealers have a habit of undercutting BFG's with an inferior tyre which is not L/T rated. A guy with us on our big trip this year (Centre,Kimberley, 11 weeks) had 7 punctures in his brand new Coopers!!! Another guy had none with his 12 month old L/T rated Coopers. Both were driving Pardo's and all tyres were badged ATR's.

What was he illiterate?
It’s a simple matter to look at the specs before your buy the tyre.

No, not illiterate - a retired university professor who is new to 4 wheel driving. He took advice from club members and asked for Cooper ATR's and that was what he was given. He even told the dealer that he intended to do an extensive trip through the outback and the Kimberley. AND, let me tell you, it took quite a close inspection to find the difference in the tires (as Coopers call them). I have always run BFG's and have never asked the dealer for L/T's - It has never occurred to me that a manufacturer of ATR's would have two different specs. The only question for me has been A/T or M/T.
I once read that experience is the mistakes that we have lived through. I guess that doesn't apply to you.

Hi Teege
I recently inspected Cooper’s tyre specifications.
They list their Light Truck, Passenger Construction, Ply ratings and other very detailed information on all thier tyres.
If the professor purchased his tyres without looking at this information he was ill prepared for the trip. If the professor was new to 4WDriving your club should have been a bit more specific on tyre construction. I travel off the beaten track on my own a fair bit and I look into the details of all equipment before purchase – then I have only myself to blame if something is not up to spec. Yes I have made a lot of mistakes but you have to take responsibility for your own decisions in this life – stop blaming others.

By the way; if Cooper’s salesmen are such conmen, why did the 4WD club recommend them, or is it only you who has the inside information?

No not perfect – I make lots of mistakes – but I wouldn’t put Passenger construction tyres on a 4WD.
Coopers ATR’s come in Passenger, and LT in 6,8 or 10 ply. With your info you can’t compare apples with apples.

Dennis,

As mentioned, the guy is new to 4wd. The only reason you know about tyres is because, as you have said, you travel off the beaten trck a fair bit, and therefore have built up plenty of knowladge on the subject.

Why is it so hard for you to understand that not everyone knows everything on everysubject. Not even you.

Hi Rob.
I wasn’t having a go at the guy who used the wrong tyres on his 4WD.
I was having a go at Teege who said that Cooper’s suppliers pull shonky tricks to flog their tyres.
Regards Dennis

By the way - you sound like my wife.

Check out Gmd's thread last week 82459

Still don't see how to get them shipped over myself , else I would probably buy the same BFG MT tyres Gmd did and for the same reason - not cost but because the 255/85/16 size is not available here in Oz.

Beaurepaires have a Dunlop/Goodyear special-4 for 3.
This covers Grand Treks etc. While these sorts of tyres are a little overpriced, with this deal they are better. Got 4 Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour 265/75/16 for $1004. LT, AT.
They certainly ride better than the Scorpions at 40psi on road.

Just remember that the boots that manufacturers put on new cars are the cheapest that they can get to do the job required.

NOT the BEST required for the job

I had Yokohama Geolander H/T's on my 100 ser when I bought it at 58,000k

The fronts were stuffed at 86,000 due to lots of small roundabouts where I lived.

At 86,000 put a set of BFG A/T LT's on and at 150,000 still have plenty of tread on them.

85% of that mileage was towing a 2800kg van around Australia, plus some off roading.

So far havent even had a puncture in them.

Car will be sold next year and expect they will just about be worn out by then so will put the spare wheels with H/T's back on to sell it ( 2 Yokos replaced in case you are wondering)

I have received 255/85 R16 last week by Fedex from the US. Took 8 days.
Tyre plus shipping still $120 - GST cheaper, and I could not even get them here at all ..
let nobody tell you that US shipping is too expensive, Australian greed of the importers make it even more expensive ...
tirerack.com is where to look.
My tyre was $180 + $70 shipping + $28 GST.

No I don't have them mounted yet.I wanted to buy another 2 (spares) but this time they quoted $130 shipping each, and I questioned that. Waiting for an answer to that. Maybe they used different tariff for 2 instead 6 .. Have a container coming early next year and might just throw them in then ...
Still with a 130 shipping each its cheaper than here.... this is obscene isn't it ..

Same on the ham gear ... just quoted another HF ham antenna for the trailer and it is less than one third and they don't even have stock here in OZ and you have to wait 8 weeks while you get it shipped from the US in 5-8 days at a fraction of the price. Some say warranty ?? I say buy a decent product and use it right and you do not need warranty. A good product does not need warranty !! Cheap ones do.

have fun
