Hi To all,
re FJ 80 1990 petrol / LPG.Landcriuser
Hope some one can point me in the right direction re the oil I should use to quiet down the old girl .
I have noticed that on deceleration I get a real whine from the Diff,
and the Gear Box,even sounds a bit slappy,if I go up and down slightly in speed
also the 3rd and 4th gear is sounding noisy as
well,when loadedup accelerating.
So while I am at it I want to change front ,back, Diffs Transfer case and Gear box, I have heard putting a heavy oil and an additive like Nulon G70 will fix the problem , but before I invest in oil I would like some advise to what others have done as I am sure others have tried this before,
I don't know the weight of the oil I should use.I have just been told an heavy oil.and an additive.
so any tips would be great
thankyou all in advance
cheers
wizzo

Hi wizzo,
first of all, how many km?
The diff whine is preload. I bet it has done some heavy towing. Nothing will stop the noise as it is the gears not running dead centre on each other.
The whole driveline in the early 80 series were slappy you can help by putting in later CV's and hub plates in the front.
The full time 4wd's always whined from new.
3rd and 4th pretty normal for a high km box you can try castrol VMX 80 or VMX-M. This will help with cold gear changes and provide good protection. (This also could be the rear diff preload, the torque in 3rd and 4th can mask it) does it go quiet after 90kph or when you have a load in the back?
Rear diff castrol LSX-90 (LSD)
Front diff and transfer case castrol EPX80-90 or the VMX

this is all good advice, the slop in the drivetrain is in the c/v's and drive plates the early cruisers ran....definately vmx-m for the 5 speed or you will not be able to change gears when cold.

mate in the hilux, i just put the penrite professional in it, 140 weight, queitened the diff down.
I would be taking it to a diff place to get looked at, you may get away with a tweek, it's where they tight the pinion flange bolt to torque spec's, or pull the rear diff out and measure the backlash/ preload.
IH8MUD, marlin crawler, have some good tech articles that cover 80's and other vehicles.
good luck and plenty of research does help. i know just swapped out two diffs and did a front axle rebuild, new bearings seals and bronze bushes. like i said complete. a years worth of research for a days work.
good luck i hope this helps
