White bonnet glare

I've recently acquired a 78 series which is all bonnet and white in colour. I'm getting my face cooked by the glare which is evident after I take the sunnies off after a days drive. I got a couple if ideas in mind like paint the bonnet black or have a large print of a bush scene stuck on the bonnet.

Does anyone else have this glare problem and what have you done? Thanks

G'day Rod

I own two all white Toyota Land Cruisers ~ a 75 series Troopy and an 80 Series wagon, to cut back on the sun glare off the bonnet(s) I simply do not deliberately wash either of the vehicle bonnets, its quite effective ~ I do however wash and at times polish the rest of the vehicle(s), not too often though!!

I've driven some trucks that had the same problem, The company just painted the top of the bonnet with mat black paint.

Get a pair of 40w flexible solar panels and stick em on your bonnet.

Get some Tcut! rub it on and leave it chalky don't polish it off Tcut doesn't leave paint work shiny.

You could get a stick on tinted wind screen sun visor strip and mount it at the bottom of the screen rather than the top.

Whilst I would be the first to say its stupid it is illegal to tint a windscreen other than the top 100mm or no lower than the top of the wiper sweep.

illegal maybe, stupid no. As you probably are not aware, we are talking about a section of windscreen that does not provide any road vision what so ever. All you see though this part of the screen is the white bonet - and all its glare.
I recall often placing clipboards etc in this position to reduce glare - with good effect.

I meant the rule is stupid not doing it.

It doesnt differ It just says you may only tint the top 100mm

Have seen Roadtrains with partial windscreen silver covers cut down like that.

I had a severe problem with glare from the intercooler bulge on my 79 trayback. This was so severe that I had problems driving at some times of day.

I had a signwriter put some black vinyl type of material on the bonnet. It worked pretty well. If doing it again I would have had the sides of the bulge covered as well. One day I will probably have the whole bonnet painted matt black.

Like others I find a bit of dirt and grime reduces the problem.

Sometimes I put a baseball cap on the dash and move it around to block the glare that the patch does not stop.

That looks really neat Flynnie.
Something like that is what I have been considering and like you say doing the full width of the bonnet, to which I'd go to one of these signwriting places that have the capability of doing these large ads that one see's on buses etc and have them do it from some digi-photos of bush scenes of places I've been to.

The two blokes who fitted it did a great job. It was at one of the places that does buses and trucks. One of them is a local and he checked it out after a few days to make sure the edges did not lift. No problems with that.

I did wonder about getting a big patch, like on the Country Energy vehicles (actually that was where I got the idea from) and having a logo or artwork put on. May revisit that in future. Perhaps if you give it a go you can show your results on the forum.

A great idea to base it on a photo of a bush scene. I was wondering what on earth to use if I did that and you may have given me the answer. Maybe I will give it a go next year before the National Gathering.

One thing to watch. The windscreen washer nozzles had to be removed and refitted and this meant the shroud for the intercooler needed a few new plugs after the job. They do not like being removed and replaced. Fall out after that they do. :) Only a minor thing but allow for it.

Do you reckon a desert sunset picture would work? Arty things are not my strong point. Perhaps an eclipsed moon? A lot darker and more in keeping with a glare reduction panel. Probably not the right sort of image, though. Perhaps a good campfire photo.
