Hi all

Just wanting to get the pros & cons of a chassis ext for my Dual cab MK Triton. Wanting to hear from those who have both negative & positive experiences. I'm just keen to ext the wheel base to assist with load distribution.

Thanks

Stef

Hi Stef,
Not sure about the MK, but my ML gets a fair bit of flex with the standard chassis. I've got a small dent either side of the back of the cabin where the tub has moved back against the cabin (about 20mm of flex). If you have a look on "newtriton.net" there are a couple of threads talking about chassis actually bending in the new MN's, mostly associated with towing moderate to heavy loads.
Cheers, AllanK

Hi Joe n Mel n Kids,

Is your response directly related to info on the extended Tritons or extended chassis of all makes?

hi Trevor ..... No not the Tritons...... i was looking at various 'duel cabs" and conversions a few years ago and asked around about doing chassis extensions on "duel cabs" and from what i found out was that the likes of Tritons, Hiluxs and others in that bracket of 4wd have not had a good history of chassis extensions or heavy towing, was shown some with "bubbles" in the chassis right behind the cab where it seems the chassis had flexed and was seemingly swollen, all had been towing heavy loads and on rough roads ....
It seemed to me that the likes of the bigger Patrols and cruisers could take it better ....
My assumption was the chassis is overall stronger in the larger cars and suitable for some extentions to be done, the smaller cars had a smaller chassis and the extention could be excellent and strong but where it attaches is still the same chassis and has extra load placed on it with the mods, it is like a longer lever to bend something, place the wheels apart further and it will place exceptional strain on all parts of the cab and chassis ..... i have seen one with a ripple in the roof, it was a standard d/c with no mods ...
By all means dont let me discourage anyone doing it but do as much reserch as possible so you get it right first time ...
Go to "google images" and enter "bent chassis rails" and you will see some pics and links

i should add for "Stefandsal's" benifit that i have a chassis extention on the lc and can only report the positives of getting it done, it made a good car better and gave me what i wanted.. but i have to admit i am a bit scared of overloading it and giving it a flogging on bad roads, if you do it and look after it then you will be fine ...
Cheers
Joe

Stef,
Saw a dual cab Triton whilst driving into town the other day and the tray was noticeably tipped up at the rear. The guy had a lot of heavy looking gear in the back but the ride height looked ok. I do not know if the chassis was just flexed or bent. I would be worried if it was mine.

I hope you can get good info before making a decision.
cheers

I've had a Patrol Wagon cut down to a dual cab and extended 600mm and have seen many of these conversions. The only 'smaller' models I have seen extended have had the 6 wheel lazy axle style conversion.
