I was thinking of doing this trip late December / early January and was wondering what the best route (not too difficult) would be and what there is to see along the way.
I'll be towing my
Kimberley with a 4wd but I don't want to do the whole trip travelling only 100km / day (otherwise I'd cross the Simpson again).
I'll be leaving from
Adelaide (to Uluru first) and have 2 to 3 weeks available to do the trip (one way).
Is it just going to be too hot.....???
Appreciate your feedback!!

Rory,
The way the weather is at the moment in eastern Aust I think you will have to be very flexible with your plans.
At the moment I think you would have to drive back to
Adelaide and drive along the coast.

If you are coming to QLD right now, bring a boat - more use than a 4WD.

Hi Rory,
You don't have a lot of choices. For starters, the Simpson is closed to all travel from December 1 to March 3.
Next shortest is the Plenty/Donohue Highways to
Boulia. Not my favourite road, boring and usually stony. Also closes if wet. Then down the blacktop to
Brisbane.
The Southern route from Alice through
Marla, William Ck,
Lyndhurst, Innaminka to Brissie is an interesting but longest route and you would need to watch the weather to avoid getting stuck remotely.
PS. Make sure your air-conditioner is working!

Thanks Allan - we were'nt really thinking of going via the Simpson - (a wet and muddy trip in July / August this year got that out of my system for a while).
I may have to rethink my plans a little (not go via Alice) as I'd like a route with some interest and may look at going up via
Broken Hill.

May be a good idea to give Alice the miss Rory. It is stinking hot there in December.
Mind you,
Broken Hill is not the coolest place either. But push on to Brissie, the
Gold Coast and the Sunny Coast and it can be lovely. The humidity cuts the heat back and the beaches............
well, bring ya togs!
This rain doesn't bother us much either. The beer-gardens have umbrellas!
Have a ball mate.

Rory,
You probably won't get to see the Darling Rv with this much
water in it again for some time. If you come nth via
Broken Hill look into doing the Darling Rv run, if roads are open.
Also keep in mind the closer you get to the East coast at that time of year the more traffic (and lunatic drivers with no patience) you will have to contend with but the further away from the coast you stay the more heat you will have to contend with. Look for regions with good inland river systems where you can swim till your hearts content and keep out of the mayhem on the coast.
Sadly we join the bedlam of nthn NSW just before xmas every year but after xmas it's NQ with much less traffic this year yippee!!.
Cheers, Trevor.

Actually Rory, when I lived in
Adelaide and had rellies in
Brisbane I usually travelled via the Riverland and up the Newell through Dubbo. Nice route with good scenery and diversions if you have kids with you. Just a thought.
