Trying to complete multiple modifications to my new Patrol for Xmas and its time for a new CB radio - hard to get motivated as you just know its going to take all weekend - but off we go as I squeezed the wire cutters and severed a multiple wire loom that had to be extended 200mm under the dash.
Then it came time to mount the aerial thru the roof centre and somehow I managed to get it thru in only 1/2 hour and even feed the antenna cable complete with plug attached thru the dropped down roof lining , down the drivers A pillar and the lead was actually long enough to reach the radio.
Ahead of schedule now I watched the V8 supercars as Jamie Wincup got his car onto the track at the race end then effectivly lost the championship after a massive accident re-build effort just because he was short of completing a full return lap as the race was called early because time was up
Talk about stiff luck !
Back out at the Patrol I thought I'd try and get one more mod in.
I hate the power window's operation which is that the car key has to be set to ignition just to wind the windows down.
Eight years ago I solved this problem with my other Patrol, and I read my own documentation from 2002 and took a gamble.
And yep we just had to move the same Red/Yellow wire at the back of the fuse panel and splice it into the Green/Red wire 1 inch to the left and now the power windows operate with the key on accessories just like the cars radio & new CB etc.
Much more civilized , and to think that the same wires in the same colour have stayed in same place over 8 years of manufacture.
Gotta love GU Patrols.

Usually there is blood or some issue with these things Robert - but not this time - even vaccummed the iron filings from the hole in the roof out of the carpet which impressed the wife (mind you she still won't let me near her car with a drill in my hand !

I'm sure they can be Pepper , but as my manual GU never had that I haven't looked into it. Also never seen this mod on other Patrol sites.
Its an annoying little noise that seems to be there whenever the door is open and a key inserted , so I will be playing with
mine for sure.

If you take off the shroud around the steering column, you will see a plug with 2 wires on the back of the ignition barrel.
Unplug this and hey presto, no more chime!

It used to infuriate me aswell!
As did the windows not working without the key. I went a different way about it. I just removed the relay (behind glovebox) and put a jumper wire across the relay pin "sockets." Works anytime!

Did
mine last night - about 40min of which several were dodging showers and swatting mossies.
Make sure steering column is down and 3 phillips head screws on bottom plastic cover come out. I didn't see that there is a 50mm diameter ring of plastic around the ign barrel , take this off first it just clips in, then prise top/bottom sections apart. On base of barrel is a white plug fitting with two red wires - this doesn't come off but red wires are only 150mm long and go to a brown plug. Just unclip brown plug and its done.
When putting plastic covers back on take care they sort of clip around the steering column.
Picture shows red wires from white fitting , they have black tape covering.

Thanks again Nick

Robin, I takes me hat off to ya! Any man who will put a hole through his car roof is a man after my own heart whom I can respect!
I have just moved my AM/FM antenna to a stubby on the roof of the Troopy and was able to use the same hole for the Sat-phone antenna. Plenty of silicon gave me comfort. Also banged a couple in the rear roof for work lights. No Fear.

Hi Allan
Always surprizes me why some shy away from this as its a winner from every point of view - and I think is a non-issue when it comes to trade in time.
Sounds like your into the swing on doing it right as
well !

Hi Robin, love reading your stories, some good reading and pics along the way, must say I would myself be not drilling holes through my 9 year old prado let alone a bran spankn new one lol, your gamer them me big time, I would for sure either cut the hole too big or have a permanant leak some where in the roof, was nervous enough when they were fitting the
snorkel I pulled the inner trim away from the side pillar (between windscreen and front door window) so they could see the tubes from the sunroof and not drill through them when mounting the
snorkel bracket LOL. Read your post on the reduced gearing for low range down
hill etc, you dont muck around do you. I remember reading about how annoyed you were with the auto down
hill then next post you had done the mods LOL. Hope the beast is going
well for you and that spare key is working ok after getting it tuned to the patrol so it would work, been driving around for 3 weeks myself with out radio as i didnt have a clue what the code was for the radio after they did the head and had to disconect the battery, my mate bought home the decoder (10 second job) from where I use to work as I refused to pay $50 for them to work on it for 10 seconds after I had pulled the dash and radio out for them already. (wife told me Im a tight ar#e) lol Regards steve m

Hi Steve
You must have tons of patience or really hate being ripped of - but I guess knowledge is money these days - I still have problems with things like the cost of software - other week I comissioned a project , thousands of dollars - and all we got was an email with computer code in it.
Vapourware but for the knowledge contained , reminds me of that little gem when an engineer submitted a bill once for a repair and the accountant demanded the bill be itemized.
Engineer did so and it read $2 for the part and $4998 for knowing where to put it !

Come on Axle - the only thing Nissan got off Landrover was the two live axles and coil springs , whilst landrover moved on or off depending on your point of view.
After an in depth technical discussion Nissan kept the Axles - or could that have been that they just ran out of development funds.

Actually that is a very interesting point Robin, Developing funds, or was it what we have suits the oz market let it be!, sales must have had some impact to stay with what you would call the Old design", Kept blokes like your self, and me happy enough, . although i have the defender, and later Toyo set up
There is no substitute for coils and solid beam axle for rugged work, and on the other side the toyo v8 pedo IFS is so beautiful to drive, and quiet capable
in the rough, What ever turns you on i guess!,....LOL
Cheers Axle.
