worst/best meals.

I nearly put w/shire sauce on my dim sims tonight, however it did remind me of the time of our first club trip. We had set up the oztents, put on the dinner and cracked the first drink.
the new neighbours asked`whats for tea?' ,we replied `chinese"

the look on their faces when we had the dimmi's was priceless.

whats your best/worst meal ?

We were camped out in WA's eastern goldfields with about 10 mates and had finished tea.

I mixed up a sultana damper put it in the camp oven and the coals on the lid.

A mate said what are you cooking?

Pickled pork for cold meat tomorrow, I said as a joke.

What a great idea, he responded

After a while he said 'I can smell that pork, smells great' I was sure he was just going along with my joke.

A little while later he said 'I can't wait to taste that crackle!' Then I knew he really thought it was pork.

You should have seen the look on his face when I pulled a damper out of the camp oven.

He hasn't lived it down to this day

Hi Burra

My wife makes "pasties" in the coals, using a very thin damper, hamper corened beef mixed with canned mixed vegies, and she wraps it with alfoil and chucks them in the coals. They are probably one of my favourite foods.

The one I hate the worst is a bush onion (bulb root) that the people here call "joonta". They taste a bit like roasted almonds when cooked, but can be extremely acidic, and can make one's breath smell like fresh flatulence.

Cheers

we get a big spud each, cut of the top, scoop out the centre, fill with diced bacon, egg, salt, pepper and herbs to taste, replace the top, wrap in foil and put them on the coals to roast. Beautiful.
works great in the wood heater in winter as well.

Camped near Perdika Siding after a wonderful Simpson Crossing, tour leader decides to shout the tour a roast dinner, woo hoo.

The roast is prepared, into the camp oven and onto the coals, checked as you do, back into the coals, still not cooked, after many many hours of cooking, tour leader decided that the roast must be cooked, removed it from the camp oven and started to carve it, only then did the penny drop, it was a corned beef that was being roasted.

To make matters worse, just as it was being served a sand storm whipped thru the camp and covered everything in sand........worst meal I have ever had.

Best meal I had was a Bacon Bomb.

Grab a large mushroom and destalk .
Place upside down on bbq/pan.
Crack an egg inside it.
Add bacon pieces.
Finally wrap like your wrapping a present with more bacon strips.
Cook till ready .

Cheers Hungry Wilko

Years ago we were on holiday in Tasmania. Had cold wet time and after several weeks of touring and bushwalking we decided to stay in a camping ground in Deloraine to have hot showers, clean up and lash out on a hot meal in a restaurant.

We had different dishes but both ended up with the worst case of food poisoning that we have ever had. Took 3 days before we were game (or could) go more than a short walk away from the loo.

The previous month I had been in India and had no food problems at all. Had to come back to Aus to get Deloraine belly.

The memory is still painful.

Best camp meal - probably boned leg of lamb, stuffed with dried apricots and prunes, cooked in the Cobb with spuds and pumpkin.

Going back a few years when our boys were kids, we had a fairly late model xc falcon station wagon' any way we decided to go on a picnic / bbq, the location was pottsville beach on the nsw north coast, any way I loaded the gas bottle primus on board but the Cook forgot the frying pan, at lunch time the kids were hungry and pestering their mum for a feed, oops no frying pan, so I came to the rescue, I took one of the Hub Caps off the Falcon, gave the inside a bit of a scour with beach sand and water, flushed it clean and cooked our bbq in it, ok it took a bit longer than normal cause it would only hold a couple of chops at a time but it did the job, and amazingly the hub cap didn't get that burnt look, just put it back on the wagon after we had finished.

Cheers

Shortly after we were married, my wife who knows I love bread & butter pudding, decided to make me a treat.

At the time we were living in an old house, the owner had been placed in a nursing home, and we rented.

Anyway, he had left in the pantry a lot of spices and other cooking stuff.

Well, the big presentation, looked great, cooked to perfection, but one taste and that was it.

She had used cayenne pepper instead of cinnamon.

Granny Smith apples...core them through and fill the centre with brown sugar and cinamon...wrap in alfoil and bake in the coals.

Serve with cream or custard...bingo...5 minute Apple Pie.

Fab.

Best???? Geeze, the list could go on here..... 'cos I don't mind a feed! But on our desert adventure this year Gayleen would prepare a stew in the morning in a Thermal Pot, and it would cook all day, served for dinner and they were superb! We nicknamed them "Girly Stews".... 'cos they were made with Skirt Steak... Boom Boom!

Worst??? When I first met Gayleen, her sister offered to make me toasted sandwiches, cheese, ham and tomato..... having never seen sliced wrapped cheese before, she didn't peel the plastic skin off. Hilarious!

last years trip to moreton island, decide two nights away from departure to go to the gutter bar for dinner, it was closed, bugga

Whilst in the gutterbar, bought some stuff, raced back to camp, whipped up a quick meal in 15 minutes flat, being nine at night, its was mice, loggos pasta sauce, pasta, tinned tom's and bacon and mushies, and some other stuff.

was the best meal. the gutter bar made a profit on its night closed....

Worst meal is easy,

dragged my tired backside into a truckstop, ordered the adequately sized rump-n-veg then sat in the drivers room and went to sleep. Was woken with a "this must be yours" comment from the shiela tapping me on my shoulder, I said thanks and promptly put the little bag of salt all over the meal then tucked in. Bugger....that wasn't salt it was SUGAR!!!. The shiela laughed and said if you can eat 2 mouthfulls she would cook me another meal no charge. Tasted like cr@p but I needed the feed so down with another 2 mouthfulls I went.

Cheers, Trevor.
