Well after studying the changes to the RFDS HF service. It looks to me like it comes down to this.

For WA & Cairns - you can cantact RFDS via Selcall on their frequencies or VKS but not by using the Emergency ( 2 tone) button.
For rest of Qld - same after Jan 1 ( plus emergency button till then)
For Central and Broken Hill you can use the emergency button on RFDS freq's or selcall via VKS ( treated as a phone call). No direct Selcall.

It is worth reviewing your HF, it will probably need reprogramming.

I have a Codan 9323 and it's currently got Emergency call facilities for the RFDS in WA and QLD and can NOT do a Selcall on these frequencies. Gotta reprogram it.

It's worth checking to see if your HF can Selcall on these frequencies before you go away.

It's all getting rather complicated. I am aware that RFDS is moving to SatPhones for their internal use and it is beginning to seem that eventually all their communications will be SatPhone. I'm glad that I got a SatPhone for my primary emergency comms.
The HF can stay for ABC and as a backup via VKS737.

The HF had its potential shortcomings anyway....... If you lost your antenna (rollover) or lost your vehicle electrics (it can happen!) or if away from the vehicle then no HF!

(And yes, I am aware of connecting a long-line antenna in lieu of the vehicle whip.)

Cheers

Interesting. This leaves those with older equipment that doesn't have selcall capability out in the cold in an emergency. Unless thay can find someone to answer a voice call or can wait until the next sked.

G'day Pete, No, HF radio is not being left behind, a relationship between VKS737, the RFDS and VKE237 is being established and will soon be a fact and in an emergency a Selcall to a number yet to be named but probably 0000 will give you an immediate telephone link to the RFDS and a live operator on 24 hour service just like calling 000. Not operational yet but watch this space.

That is interesting Rob:

"and in an emergency a Selcall to a number yet to be named but probably 0000 will give you an immediate telephone link "

That will only work if you have selcall which my Codan 8525A doesn't. This is one of the reasons I bought a Jenal microphone but these are no longer readily available.

There are a lot of older radios than my 8525 out there with an emergency call button that will no longer do anything.

I wonder if they will change the specification for type approved HF sets to delete the requirement for the call button?

Cheers

Pete

Like a lot of things Pete your Codan 8525A has been superseded LOL, time you moved up to a Codan NGT with all add-ons like GPS. VKE237 can do you a deal as they are agents.

It's just a sign of the changing times.
Once it was all HF, in recent years it's a mixture of HF/Satphone.
Going forward I suppose the HF will fizzle out in favour of the more technological advanced Satphone.

Hi Bob
A recent report from Codan advised that the satellites are falling (literly) out of the sky and will not be replaced. They also advised that the Govt dept who are out bush are finding it is so expensive for sat phone that they are getting lic to go on HF radio again.

I understood, the one advantage the HF radio has/had over the Satellite phone is that in a dire emergency instead of calling any of your listed numbers (possibly back home or the nearest town’s police station or the like) when you call for assistance on the HF, those nearby that hear your radio call, may be able to assist earlier because of their close proximity. It always made me think the HF radio was something I may add to the Iridium Satellite phone and the Spot Tracker for future trips, especially considering we are going further and further bush in a Jeep.

Has this advantage disappeared now with the change to what appears to be a phone call to RFDS over the HF radio?

PS the Jeep so far has had a major fire on the Strzelecki track, holed the sump at Mt Mulgrave FNQ, Blown up the yellow top starter battery out back of Laverton WA and blown a turbo hose near Israelite bay WA. We sorted all these without outside help, only used the Sat phone on the Strez track to contact the Insurance co. to get permission to continue the trip in a badly damaged vehicle (spent two days on the side of the road re wiring it to be able to drive it albeit with no brakes) Shannon’s said OK and we did a further 18,000klms before getting home to Perth. (repaired the brakes at Birdsville).
