Help for suitable destination

Hi I have just discovered this place and have been doing lots of reading, but this is my first post.
In the next 2 to 3 years our family is going to take off for 6 months traveling, but in the meantime we are going to have a few small trips to find out what stuff we think we need and what extra stuff we do not need or have simply over looked and need to get.
We have a Holden Rodeo TF. In the last 6 months it has had the diesel pump rebuilt and dyno tuned, Old man emu Suspension fitted, Snorkel fitted, two spear wheels and UHF radio. We will be towing a 7’X4’ off road trailer with large water tank underneath and sleeping a Sothern cross tent.
So to my question:
We have done a couple of 10 day camping trips up at the Big River national park and our next Trip is to the Grampians just after Christmas. I would like some other trips in or around Vic I can do before taking off for 6 months with the wife and two kids. Would like some good 4wd tracks, ( that are doable with an off-road trailer ) camping off the beaten track ( not caravan parks ), preferably where you can have a camp fire. A big ask I know, but I hope some of you might be able to suggest some other great trips we can try out. We live in the Yarra Valley and were thinking about have a look out Mansfield area.
Many thanks Steve

A good shakedown trip to give you an idea of conditions similar to what you'll find in central Oz is around the Wyperfeld, Big Desert & Sunset Country in North West Vic. Excellent camping, lots of history, lookouts, challenging sandy tracks & quite a lot of facilities throughout the area.
For the High Country my recommendation is not to tow your trailer everywhere, rather base camp in a central area & do day trips from there. Usually I'd suggest somewhere like Pineapple flat as a good location but due to flood damage many of the tracks in the Mt Stirling area are closed at present. Talbotville (near Dargo) is another great base with some of the best 4x4ing & iconic destinations close by.
If you have 2 weeks an excellent first desert adventure is up to Broken Hill, White Cliffs, Tiboorburra, Camerons Cnr, Innamincka, Birdsville returning via the Flinders. A loop like that will test your car, equipment & planning without getting too far off the beaten track.
Have fun. Cheers Craig..................

There's some nice camping out on the Aberfeldy River and good tracks around there. You could also try Geehi on the Swampy Plains Creek between Khancoban and Thredbo. Great camping, crystal clear stream for the kids. Some good 4x4 tracks, eg. Mt Pinnabar.

Thanks guy's
I will do some research into the places suggested, but they all sound good. We might be able to check them all out before we take off. My wife is a school and I work with school kids so we get plenty of time to travel around.
If you have any more places or things we should consider please keep them coming.
Thanks Steve
