Hi all just after a lil bit of advice with towing a camper trailer with an auto gear box. We own a 1999 GU patrol 4500 with an auto as its my first auto ever, was wondering if its like a 5 speed manual and shouldnt be using 5th. Should I have the OD mode off or not. The camper is not overly heavy and the big 6 pulls it great.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Have a read of thread 82799

all your questions have been answered there.

The Patrol forum will also probably help.

My advice is use 4th and the reasons are given in that thread.

Put preferences in the box at top of forum to "Show threads by response"

Change to show 100 on a page
Scroll down to see "Towing with a 5 speed gearbox"

Had this box for many years behind a 3.0Di and did a lot of towing.

This box has a lock up torque converter that efferctively gives you direct drive when it is engaged. It will lock and un-lock depending on speed and load and is signalled by a 500rpm or so drop in revs on the tacho (but without a gear change).

The trick is to keep it locked.

I used to only use O/D when towing above 80 KPH under light load. At higher speeds, as soon as the lock came off (due to load) I would turn O/D off. In most circumstances it will lock again (in 3rd) at speeds over 80 KPH. At lower speeds on hills don't be afraid to manually pull 2nd, if you are above 60 it will almost certainly re-lock.

I had a temp gauge fitted to the tranny and can assure you that if you drive it right and keep it locked you will not have any heat problems, it is a good box.
