Does anyone have any experience of installing a Treg hitch on the standard Toyata tow bar. We understand an adaptor plate may be necessary; if so where can one be acquired?

Thanks

Relatives of ours hired a camper with a Treg hitch and have a genuine Toyota tow bar on their 120 series Prado. No problems with clearance. There is also the Trigg hitch which is slightly longer, but accepts all poly block couplings.

I have a treg hitch on my 120 series Prado. Just remove the ball and fit the hitch to hook up the camper. It clears the door without any problems.

After seeing a friends original Prado towbar shear off and his van dissappear

down a hill the first thing I would do is bin it and put on a genuine HR towbar.

The head of them is a casting and they are only held on with about 4 bolts.

His broke on an angle and the whole kaboodle chains and all came adrift.

As the van was only 1500kg it did not have a breaksafe on it and so tootled

down the paddock and luckily wasnt damaged.

If you are subjecting your towbar to off road stresses it may be advisable to upgrade it.

It also had a load sharing set up which I believe Toyota say aren't to be used with that particular tow bar.

As do lots of them from what I have seen.

Is still a casting which is subject to breakage more easily that the box section HR models.

i beleive Kimberly Kampers make mention of possible problems with some Prado towbars when it comes to fitting Tregg Hitches onto the vehicle to suit their campers. i'm not sure exactly what the problem is, but maybe a phone call to your local KK agent may shed some light on more info, and possibly what is required and where it's available to get.

Our camper (Goldstream wind-up) has a Treg and the Prados door opens over it (and promptly runs into the gas bottles on the draw bar, not that that's a major problem). We don't use any adaptor plate, just bolt the Treg reciever to the hitch tongue in place of a ball. Our genuine tow hitch and tongue has completed over 30,000 trouble free km's.

Not about to replace it to the hell of it, but if I was buying a new hitch (to go on a new car) I'd probably get a HR assuming it was suitably integrated.

The problem that can occur with the treg hitch is that the tongue on the prado is round where the ball sits and so the treg moves around left to right.
You can buy and adaptor plate from treg to keep it square but we found it was easier to just get another tongue to suit so instead of using shifters etc, just pull out the tongue and insert the one you want with the fitting already attached

That is exactly what I did.
