This is something that has niggled at me for awhile now, The NRMA's Open Road advertising and Promoting Oversea trips & Holidays.
Here is just one of many overseas holidays advertised in the Open Road EG, An Insider's guide to Spain and Portugal
With the Aussie Dollar at such highs a lot of people have chosen to travel OS, but why is a motoring organization in Australia promoting the idea of getting a better deal by going Overseas?
I find this disturbing that they would do this when a lot of businesses that relies on the traveling tourist dollar in NSW are struggling. I don't know if other Motoring bodies in other states are doing this as well, the RACQ and the likes.
Yes there are some local destinations but there are a lot of overseas ones.( I do realize that the advertising of this type brings on dollars)
There is so much to see in this state, let a lone the rest of the country.
I've been a member now for over 25 years. Anyway it's been bugging me and just thought I'd ask your thoughts on it.

Jon, I think you will find they are just trying to earn a quid via commissions on the sales of tickets for those tours and packages.

I assume their travel dept. looks after all of the local as well as overseas holidays, so maybe not using staff.

You would like to think that the incoming $$'s help to run the NRMA, so hopefully the membership fees don't have to go up so often.

cheers

I think that should read,

"so maybe not using any extra staff"

Hi Dave,
"so hopefully the membership fees don't have to go up so often"
We all don't like paying more, and yes their revenue should help with lower fees and better services for their members. I guess mate, it's the ethics of it as well, to me it just doesn't sit right.
Maybe it's just me, Don't know.

Jon, I am not saying it is either unethical or not, sometimes ethics and profits shouldn't be in the same sentence.
I can understand where you are coming from though.

But without other motoring organisations overseas booking holidays and tours to Australia, we wouldn't have so many tourists running around here.
Think of all the Fritz in a Britz driving around. Generally they spend a lot of money while they are here.

Maybe we should talk to our politicians about passing a law forbidding people travelling overseas on holidays. Not unlike the laws the former communist states had.

Not a bad Idea Rob, LOL
I'm not wanting to stop people traveling OS, I just don't get why it is advertised so much in a Motoring Mag.
Like fair enough, you buy the Sunday paper, there is a lift out of OS trips, destinations, cruises, I don't have a problem with that and I'm not interested in it anyways, I just flick past it, But when I receive the Open Road I really don't want to know about OS destinations, I would prefer to know about travel here in OZ.
Cheers

As much as we'd all like to think differently i can't see that profit from o/s travel product sales is in any way shape or form going to filter through to make for cheaper membership.
Each and every area would need to sustain itself and certainly be profitable. None of the motoring organisations are there for members. they are business built to make money from members these days.
I don't see why we should see them to any other business we are a customer of. call it membership, subscription or partner, you're paying for a service that a company is providing. I you look hard you'll see a whole host of benefits that are there for you if you choose to use it, otherwise, you're simply insuring your risk of breakdown!..
That NRMA, RACV, RACQ have all shifted focus from their birth identities of roadside mechanical assistance services, if you accept this you'll be better rewarded.....

Hi Dan,
When put that way your right.
And yes they have all shift from were they first started from.
Another thing that I find silly, is that every now and then, they will try and tell me how to save fuel, for eg, tyre pressures, how not to race from a stop to flat out and then braking again to a stop, you know all that kinda thing. Geez, you'd think after 28 years of driving I would know a little about that kinda thing, They say to Drive around to find the cheapest fuel, bit hard in a one servo town, Wednesday is suppose to be the cheap day, It's the same price all week except for when the next truck load comes in. It either goes up or down.

I tried to enter a comp once for a new Commodore, just had to name the closest Holden dealer to me from a list. The closest one was in Newcastle, we live near Grafton, so I rang them and questioned why they didn't list Maclean & Grafton. I was told I was to far away to enter and that there were no Holden dealers north of Newcastle, because the boarder was only a few kilometers north of Newcastle.
I'm being dead set serious. This was about ten years ago.

Sorry Dan, they offer me nothing of any use except if I need road side assist.
I find their insurance way over priced, both vehicle & house, It's cheaper for us to insure through RACQ, Go figure.

Anyway, It's Friday now, Hope you have a good weekend.
Cheers.

Excellent. I think they should do more.

What!!! Phils gone mad you say.

My reason is simple the more that go overseas the less that will crowd the places we go. Imagine 100 plus vehicles (vans and 4WDs) pulling into your favourite spot in the bush. The noise at night would be disgusting. Generators everywhere for the TVs and air conditioners. You wouldn't hear the bush at all.

Years ago we showed the bloke who wrote Surfer magazine about a place we called "The Farm" at Jerringong. its now so crowded the penguins cant even surf there.

Thats my point.

Hi Phil,
Hmm it's a two edged sword Hey.
The more people holiday and spend time here, the more it becomes crowed and over crowed, which bring a whole new set of problems with it.
Fysh's boss, has just spent a month traveling through the center and he was disappointed with how busy some of the tracks are now and the speed that some travel at. But I guess we will have to get use to our world becoming smaller as our population grows.
"Years ago we showed the bloke who wrote Surfer magazine'
Hmm grew up in Byron, Strop & Delvene bought the Seabreeze Hotel, pulled it down, built a new pub, The Beach Hotel. The place when to the dogs after that, crowed beaches, all the young kids from the Gold Coast bringing down their hassles onto the breaks, their hard drugs and attitudes with them.
Occy, Rabbits, Mark Richards all use to drop down for a wave, nobody gave a rats, then It Changed, so we moved away.
Phil it's becoming a smaller & smaller world, which I don't like, but hey, gotta roll with the punches as they say.
I just find it strange to be promoting OS destinations when they are a NSW publication targeting NSW Motorists.
"You wouldn't hear the bush at all" I guess one way around this is to encourage more and people to join forums like this and show them that there is a better way to enjoy traveling and camping and to appreciate this awesome country that some take for granted.
Cheers, Hope you have a great weekend, somewhere quiet
:)

All good Jon. I have often wondered about the NSW mag promoting over seas travel. But they do have a vestid interest. What about the travel services they get a kick back on and the travel insurance. Also all the travel advertisements put in the mag by the overseas travel companies and hotels. They are promoting overseas travel for the magazine's benefit. Not the members.

Byron! I remember surfing there with George Greenough and Bob Mactavish in the early 60's. Ran into Bob a few years back. What a life! And the same for Noosa. One big day we were getting rides from Teatree almost to the creek. George made it of course. He was tops on that flexi knee board.

Was that before you?

I won't see the bigger crowds. I was thinking more of the younger ones.

I can still find empty roads. Only saw a few bikes on the Starkie Track. Two days to do it.

Geez mate your showing your age now LOL, Yeah thats way before my time.
"Bob Mactavish" now there is a name I haven't of for many, many years.
I moved there in about early 82, FJ Walkers, the abattoirs was still working then, My job was to push a blood and bone cart about.
We use to surf next to the jetty, with a few sharks sharing the same area LOL.

As a captive audience the Open Road can throw at us what they like, I guess. It's disappointing that things are moving this way.
I might be trying to hard to live in a perfect world LOL. ;)
