Hi there
I recently bought a used JAYCO HAWK offroad C/T which came w/ 2 factory fitted roof racks, 2 meters apart.
I would like to place some sort of basket on top to pick up firewood along the way or carry some other stuff.
Weight is obviously an issue. Have been searching ebay for baskets but there is nothing in that size.

What other options do I have.....?
Any advise is much appreciated.
JS.

Why not move the racks closer together. If you remove the 2 bolts on each side the whole rack will slide along and you can just drill some new holes. The bolts simply go through the plastic covering and then through a timber frame. If you raise the roof about a foot and have a look underneath you will see that there is a void in there where the bolts go. You could refill the existing holes with any number of fillers. The only thing to be aware of is that you shouldn't raise the roof with any real weight on it. I used to carry 2x13kg kayaks on mine and it really put a strain on the winder mechanism when I forgot to take them off first. (only did it once)

Yes, I might do that. I was just a bit hesitant as it was factory fitted.
Thanks for that.

I think you will probably find it was dealer fitted. When I bought mine the dealer wanted to charge me to fit it, his service guy said "why don't you do it yourself". I bought mine in 2000, and the racks were only about $75. It's a very simple process and you would have to be very careless to let the drill go throught the side wall. I actually had three different sets of holes for mine. Because you are drilling outside the line of the wall, the holes do not affect the integrity of the wall. I only suggested filling them for the cosmetic value.

G'day JS, (Prado Mad)
Factory fitted roof racks were for LIGHT Tinnies/runabouts/Kayaks, not sure that they would take a lot of wood weight, too much extra stress on chassis and springs. Maybe okay for short distance, but that is your choice. As for baskets, I think you will have to get one made up, or buy an ARB or Nissan basket. Just remember, too much weight on the pop-top fibreglass roof canopy can and will stress and fracture it near edges and corners. If you don't need to cart in too much wood, have a small wire basket fitted across the A-frame. Hope this helps out, cheers, Lyndon. PS both my brother and I own Jayco Outback C/T's

I had the same issue - everyday roof rack items (surfboard, mountain bikes, etc) were not suited to the 2m spacing between the existing racks.
I bought another single rack (from the Jayco shop) and mounted it midway between the other two.

I now have 2 large solar panels mounted and can get bikes and surfboards on there as well.
Sometimes I have borrowed and mounted a Rola basket (ideal for firewood) on there.

good luck.

Hi there PradoMad,
I just watched your videos , good to see you are using the Prado off road but the snatch strap on the tow ball is not a good idea .

I know now, have been told many times! However there was very little pulling needed and you should have seen my son's spontaneous reaction; climbing out the window and attaching the strap.
..isn't the Prado great off-road? Left my 2 mates (Pathfinder and Cruiser) dead for a couple of times now.
Enjoy the great outdoors!

Are you speaking from experience?
