Uni Joints - Grease Fittings

Hi All

I gave all the suspension and the uni joints a squirt of grease last weekend. On the front shaft the joint near the transfer case wouldn't take any grease, you know how normally you see grease come from around the caps on the uni joints after a couple of pumps...nothing. Just came out the nozzle on the grease gun.

Could the grease fitting be blocked? or are maybe the joints are on the way out? I pushed down on the ball bearing on the end of the grease nipple with a small screwdriver and fresh grease came out, but nothing around the caps.

Cheers

Stu

G'day Stu,
Not sure what you are driving, but I'll assume it is an early model vehicle (80's - 90's). There could be a number of reasons why the grease nipple appears blocked. They range from what grease has been used during servicing in the past, and temperatures and terrain that the vehicle has endured, during this time, and also the frequency that the services have been carried out. Quite often some greases will harden to the extent that they set like hard window putty. No amount of pressure will move this 'putty' very far. If this happens in the grease nipple, this 'Hard Gease" will only be moved a slight fraction back to take up the small void behind it, and the only fresh grease that will get in will be in the top entry part of the nipple near the ball bearing. (hence the grease being forced back out of the front of the grease gun - I have encountered this problem a number of times in the past, caused mostly by dirt being forced back into the nipple. The person who carried out the servicing, didn't clean the nipples first before hooking up the grease gun.) My advice is to unscrew and replace the nipple for a cost of around $2.00 if you are concerned. Places like REPCO, AUTOBARN, SUPERCHEAP, etc should be able to supply you with the new nipple. Just beware, as these come in different head and also thread sizes. Hope this helps somewhat, cheers Lyndon.

hi stu
lyndons advice is sound but as an ex farmer i use to carry a piece of thin welding wire and would get it in pass the ball bearing and wriggle it in an arc it would generally free up the blockage but if this failed then replace nipple as lyndon said blockages are generally caused by blokes whacking a grease gun onto the nipple without first wipping it clean
sand /mud is then forced into and past the ball/bearing and becomes lodged in base of nipple hope the nipple has thread on it
i have come across some that just are pressed in fit
i grease mine every 3-4 thou km when in water/sand /mud as it keeps that from getting in
cheers

Hi Stu

Definitely sounds like the grease nipple needs replacing, but be careful removing the existing one. Saw a safety film once at work where a fitter removed a damaged grease nipple which had pressure behind it from attempts to get grease through it. It 'exploded' when loosened, due to the pressure built up behind it, and pierced the eye of the fitter removing it, so be aware.

Loosen slowly, and make sure you are not 'in the line of fire' should it come out under pressure.

Cheers, Dave

P.S. Not trying to scare you, just making you aware of a potential danger, rare as it is.

I run into this problem quite often on my old backhoe. It has so many grease nipples I've never added them up and got the same figure, but it's well over 50!
I'm too mean to replace nipples until they're physically destroyed so I just unscrew them, put them in the grease gun and force grease through. Generally this clears them as the obstruction can pop out.
Not sure if it's fair to blame previous servicing for the blocked nipples. I've had this backhoe for years and I always clean the nipples before greasing. Still get the odd one that blocks up.
