Hi Folks,
Have any readers had either good or bad experience with Mickey Thompson tyres. A lot of locals are using them in preference to Coopers, BFG etc. Your comments would be welcomed. Cheers and happy trails to you.

Kent,

I've used the Cepek FC2's (Mickey Thomson own and manufacture Cepeks) as an alternative to the Cooper ST. Both good tyres again dependant on use. Ordinary outback tracks and roads fine. Off track work, not so good. Again there are quite different models and tread configurations. What will your usage be for the tyres and any particular model you were looking at?

Heres a link to a forum search for Mickey T's.

Cheers Mick

Thanks Mick,
I hadn't any particular type in mind - open to suggestion. We are planning on towing our 18'6" Outback Jacyo into some rural areas e.g. carnarvon Gorge etc and will be doing a fair amount of gravel road driving (say 15 - 20% at best). I'm only thinking of the MT's as they have a good reputation around here.
Cheers

G'day Kent - I own and run a 4wd tour company and over the 10 plus years since I started the company I have used nearly every popular brand of tyre on my vehicles and I must say I'm rather happy with the Mickey Thompson's I am currently using compared to the majority of other brands used in the past ! Until something better comes along I will be sticking with them ! Doesn't matter what brand you have if you get numerous flats for no apparent reason you won't be happy with them and you will try something else ! Different people like different tyres for different reasons .

Cheers

Gazz

Hi
Currently running 265/75/16 Mickey Thompson mud tyres. Only done 1 Simpson and 1 outback QLD tour , around 9000 ks, but no problems to date.

Seem to be a good thing.

Cheers Teza

I had MT Dick Cepek FCII's on a 100 Series and did 90,000ks on them including a 7,000k Outback trip including the Simpson. Very happy with them.

Currently Running MT Baja ATZ 4 Ribs on a 200 Series. Done about 60,000k and still have plenty to go. Mostly black top including a trip Melbourne to Cape York and Back.

I'm a big wrap for MT tyres.

Hi Kent,

I run the Mickey T MTZ on my Patrol. I find them excellent. They are good on bitumen and not as noisy as I thought, good in the wet but they are excellent on dirt and of course in mud. I had coopers before these but much prefer these. I have also had Bridgestone 694's on my previous Patrol and they were good also; Mickey T the choice of them all though.

Cheers

Hi Kent,

Running Mickey Thomo's ATZ 4 265 x 75 x 16 63,000Ks no punctures & plenty left done plenty of hard stuff with them too. We always ran BFGs but the ATZ 4s are going to take some beating I would say.

My 2c worth for the day Cheers Steve

Greetings, the Mickey thompson tyres do have a good reputation, and I would have only one reservation about them. The "relative" difficulty in finding replacements of the same type, should they be required in some areas of the bush. This may be a problem, or not ,depending on where you are going. Easy to check your route, then check for distributors en route. I hope they become more widespread.
Hope this adds to you decision. WD

I'm currently running the Dick Cepek FCII's. Up until these I've allways ran BFG's to which I've had de-laiminations, blow outs and staked the sidewalls more times than I've had hot dinners so to speak. The triple side wall construction of the BFG is not all its made out to be. However my main reason to depart from the BFG's was the price, they were just to dear.

I'm useing MTZs and they have done about 40,000 ks with no problems. Just remember if you get MTZs(muddies) they are a softer compond which means they will wear a bit quicker and chip if use in lose shale or gibber rocks.
Cheers Dave..

Hi Kent,
I bought a set of MTZs for my Rangie a few months ago, couldn't get hold of the BFG's for love nor money. To date very impressed with the MTZ's, not as noisey as they looked like they would be if you know what I mean. They were off the shelf and cheaper, what more could you ask for.
Keep the shiny side up

Over the past ten years of touring in all conditions we have tried BF muddies, Cooper and MTatz which are currently on the old girl. The only ones we will buy again is the Mickey Thompson. Followed by BF.

Thanks very much folks. It would appear (based on the lack of negative responses) that the MT's are a good tyre and worth the money. Now for a place to buy them at a reasonable price :(

Hi Kent,
We had MTZs on our 80 series and our campertrailer for our 3yr trip around oz. Over 80,000 kms and they were brilliant. We had one punture that couldn't be repaired (a railway spike) out of wilpena pound. We also had 3 nail punture we pickedup in towns. They were tyre plugged and never had any trouble with them. I would buy them again without a doubt. Great in all conditions with tyre pressures dropped appropriately.

Thanks for the info. We live in Yeppoon (East of Rocky). We have an agent in town but I haven't approached him for a price as yet.

MTZ 285/75R16, tough as you like, once they get to half or below they get noisy, also vibrate through steering once the fronts scollop. Get that with all muddies, take the good with the bad.

beat the coopers, matched the old mud bfg
