We are looking for a slide-out caravan and have seen one we like, however, it had water on the floor that appeared to come from the slide-out. Does anyone know if this is a common problem with slide-out caravans and if it is a major or minor problem. Thanks, lenron

Our 2000 model Jayco Expanda has the slide out lounge and after about 8 years the rubber moulding that stops water ingress had rusted at the bottom and fallen off the top of the opening in the van.

I went to Jayco, bought some replacement moulding and fitted it myself. Problem solved.

I would consider it a minor problem as long as there hasn't been water in the van for a long time causing the wood to rot.

Hi pjchris - many thanks for your reply. Sounds like the rubber moulding may need replacing by a reputable repair place and ask them to look it over before we go to the next step. The van is 2009 so it hopefully won't have wood rot - yet !!Appreciate your reply.

If it's a 2009 and you haven't actually bought it yet definately get it inspected at a reputabe repairer BEFORE you buy and and I would insist that they rectify any problems before you buy it.

Either that or subtract the repair quote from the asking price...

No, we haven't bought it yet and only noticed the leak because there was a lot of rain that morning. If we had looked on a fine day, we wouldn't have noticed the leak ! If we don't go ahead and buy, it certainly has taught us that when buying a second-hand caravan, if possible, only look when there has been a lot of rain. We will take your advice and see what happens.

thanks heaps Peter

I would be more inclined to say why is it leaking so soon

Would be pretty p....d off if my 2009 van started leaking from anywhere.

In trying to locate the source of the leak make sure the slide out had not been used during wet weather. If closed when wet some water can run off the top and sides and pond on the van floor.

Took the van back to where it was purchased and this is what their repair centre also said had happened. When we were looking at the van, the seller did activate the slide out several times during heavy downpours and the water came in because of that.
Thanks for confirming the findings. Much appreciated
