Fraser Island Access

Hey Guys,

Just after some advice. Looking at taking a trip to Fraser Island, QLD. We have a toyota Rav4 2001 Cruiser. Will this be suitable and will be able to access the main areas?

Thanks

Should have no problems accessing the main areas. Just remember to lower your tyre pressures to about 18/20psi

In olden times I used to take a VW Type 3 Wagon there.

You should have no trouble at all on the beaches with a Rav4 if you let your tyres down appropriately on dry sand.

The only caveat I would add is that the ground clearance may cause you to scrape the bottom/sump on internal tracks if it has been dry , as the tour buses can rut the tracks a lot.
There are often storms in summer so wait for a bit of rain if possible before trying Lake Mackenzie or Central Station. Oh and enter from Inskip rather than the Western Side as it is much easier.

Thanks Philip - we are going in through inskip which works out well.

What part into Lake Mckenzie would we have trouble with?

Thanks in advance

Those tracks are the most used of all and will therefore be softer and have a higher middle.
So you may have trouble with the whole track.
Also you will meet more traffic on both tracks and maybe have to move off the track to let a bus pass.

If you can make it to the ferry at inskip you should be OK from there on.

Just got back from a week there... plenty of rain at night.

Inskip to barge can get soft, but should be ok.
Barge to Eurong is basically a dirt road, much of it has had gravel put over it so its an easy drive.

Eurong onto the beach is easy. They have sprinklers so they can keep the sand wet and hard at the beach access point. No worries.

The main inland tracks are well maintained, Some of the trucks do make nice ruts, but other tour trucks have BIG diffs that flatten then back down. However... there were a few bits that had large holes which you may get stuck on due to clearance. I had a 2004 rav and am not sure it would have made it. I also noted that there were quite a few plastic bits off the bottom of cars on the tracks. ie soft roader stone guards.

That should cover the main areas, the eastern beach is easy, lake McKenzie (Bondi beach 2, 100s of backpackers) *should* be ok with some care, but things change daily over there.

Other things to note.

If you come across on coming traffic you might have to move off the track onto the soft stuff. May or may not be an issue?? It just depends. The buses are too big to get off so you will be the one in the soft stuff if you come across one. Having said that, many of the main tracks are one way.

The less used tracks will be risky. The Playdo only just made a few of the step ups, in low range with some scraping. (exposed tree roots where the sand has washed away). I only attempted them knowing I had a winch to get me out of need be. Lack of articulation with the RAV will potentially have you lifting wheels and loosing forward motion.
