iPad Navigation using VMS app

Hi, Has anyone had any experiences using an iPad for Navigation out bush. I have noticed that VMS have a iPad app that is available with the 4WD maps available.

Feedback and experiences on both the iPad and VMS app would be appreciated.

As Rory said not many good write ups...

Google search click here

There seems to be some issues with the GPS itself, or connecting to an external source. The issue is using cell towers to speed up the internal GPS.

Co-Pilot seems to work and i have seen a Tom Tom version on line.

These guys seem to know a bit more but talk alot about iPhones then iPads.

Good luck.

The ipad itself works just fine as a gps. I have Memory Map which is somewhat similar to the VMS app and it works perfectly well. Don't need phone coverage provided the maps are already on the device.

I am interested if anyone has had experience with the VMS app and maps.

Don't get confused between the iPad and iPhone. I have both with all the apps. The iPhone is ordinary and works better if there is a phone signal. Still works without a phone signal but keeps dropping the satellite every now and then.
The iPad is an excellent gps device. The gps chip is only in the 3G model but you dont need a sim for it to work. Very good reception and definitely doesn't need a phone signal. The screen is top notch for reading the maps as well. When Ozi explorer comes out for it I will be very happy. Mike

Don't forget to say Mike that the iPad still needs phone towers to position. You aren't the only person to say that, but Apple don't claim it on their web site. Some tests say it has "assisted gps" but that is all. Triangulated from phone towers isn't useful out of range.

The iPad does not need phone towers. Mine works without a sim card and works out in remote places where there are no towers . I don't know how many times I have to say this. Assisted gps is not what you think it is. The phone towers provide extra help when available but are not required. Most people seem to think that agps is the retarded cousin of proper gps when in fact it is better because it uses 2 sources of info. Mike

Forgot to say, the iPhone doesn't need towers either, but it's aerial is quite inadequate. Out on the Birdsville Track it can take 20 mins to get a fix and then lose it if a big cloud comes over. The iPad has excellent gps reception with or without any towers or clouds around.

To further confuse people, the Apple products usually don't store the maps on the device, so use the phone data network to download them as you go. If you put the maps on the device before hand then all is good, phone towers not required.

What software do you run on your iPad Mikehzz? Do you know if Explorer has plans to bring out an iPad app or software?

I run Sygic for street mapping and turn by turn, and Memory Map for topo. The Memory Map is quite expensive and not usable by other programs. I have the 250K aus and the desert tracks. It also won't let you import maps from other programs like Ozi.
The Ozi site says that Ipad/iphone app is in development but they have given precedence to the Google Android version first. Mike

You might be waiting a while for OziE on apple devices. An alpha version is available for Android devices so that will robably mean that Apple is a long way of as effort goes into Android.

I have had the VMS app on my iPad for a little while and it is pretty nice. Mainly (I must say) because the iPad provides a very good interface and screen is good for using as a mapping device. Some discussion around the GPS but as Mike says, the GPS works perfectly well without phone towers, they provide a backup if GPS signal for some reason not available. In fact it also uses wireless signals as another way of providing a rough location if you are indoors or in 'urban' terrain where GPS signal not available. But these only supplement the GPS receiver, not needed to receive a GPS location.

The map set which comes with VMS is reasonably good and probably OK for most users. VMS is really just a moving map and certainly does not have the level of functionality that Oziexplorer has. I don't like the fact that VMS only presents on the iPad in 'portrait' view. Interestingly the polarization of the iPad screen makes it difficult to view with sunglasses on in that mode. Also the ability to import your own map sets would be good.

Overall I would say that VMS (on the iPad at least) is quite nice and comes bundled with a reasonable set of maps. However, it is not Oziexplorer and I will be really interested to try their iPad version when it is released assuming that it will provide the full range of features currently provided. I think the Oziexplorer with the iPad interface and screen will be a really nice combination. Assume that the VMS guys are still working on updates to their product and will be interested to see where it goes from here.

Cheers,

Matt.
