Just talked to a
young block in the next door caravan.
Not long ago he had a V8 diesel fitted to his 80 series Landcruiser by a
well know WA engine conversion company.
The auto gear box couldn’t handle it – had to fit a manual.
Had to change the diff ratio as the motor revs were miss matched.
The intercooler is situated below the radiator and scoops up dirt going into deep ditches.
He has spent over 30 grand so far on mods, and still has other unresolved problems.
Seems false economy to me.

You are spot on. I used to do this sort of stuff, but now I try to tell people not to as it never works out cheaper than just buying the vehicle you wont. The worst ones are chev V8 conversions. Eric.

The whole job goes as repairs so its only money your not giving to the blodgers, I'm happy with no turbo,no computer,simple old tecnology.You see the flash ones on the tow trucks all the time headed for
perth.Its not for all I'll admitt but 80,000km in
mine and still grining

My brother is a diesel mechanic turned truck driver. A couple of years ago he broke down on the highway. Apparently a five dollar part became faulty causing the computer to do what ever it does to stop the motor. Six hours later after a mechanic came out to replace part he was back on the road. Apparently the comment was made that if it was not for the computer, the motor could have been jury rigged enough to limp into town thirty kilometres away.

IMHO, it's a "horses for courses" argument Dennis.
Personally, I wouldn't own a "modern" 4by with a computer in it to do the remote travel that we try to do as often as we can. I'll stick with the tried and true old tech stuff, that is, if I need to replace the engine in my GQ Patrol, I'll either have
mine reconditioned, or go the 6.5L Chev.
But, if I went the Chev, I'd want it done properly, not an intercooler below the radiator, for instance. The chap that works on my truck is a
well respected mechanic, and that's the sort of thing he wouldn't do.
When (if?) we give up remote touring, then I'd consider a modern 4by.

The way I look at it, If he is happy with it, who gives a rats. Sure he could of spent his money more wisely as others have suggested, but what it comes down to is, If he is happy it really isn't up to someone else to question it.

He learnt an expensive lesson with the auto box. I would of thought the engine mob would of know he would have to have a manual behind a big V8 diesel and change the diffs ratio, but hey.
To be honest, I would if I could spend near $25K on my old girl rather than buy a 100 series or later and still have to
fork out more coin down the track.
But of cause this would have to be submitted to the Department of War and finance. for a close inspection, I would have prove it was a need & not a want.
And there lays the difficult bit. Hmmm

You obviously have not looked at what these 6.5lt chev converted patrols and cruisers sell for even 3rd and 4th hand , the market sets its own prices and it is high.

Have to agree with Alloy c/t.
They pull big $$$. The market sets it's own price. Just look at what my old girl(1HDT) is worth and insurance Co's don't have a problem with it either.

Its obvious my statement confused you.
I meant "false economy" as to the difference in the cost of buying a vehicle, with a suitable sized engine, as opposed to modifying an under powered one -
including the modification costs and resale value.
As to economic running costs - a lot of modern V8s are more economical than similar sized 6's (towing similar loads)
And the "chain" - I didn't realize that you were such a sensitive guy.
I consider myself severely chastised – and I withdraw that remark :-).

My uncles 200 series turbo diesel uses less fuel then my 1kz prado both around town, off road and towing and has soooo much low down grunt and get up n go its not funny. If I had the dosh Id be in a 200 series T/D tomorrow. Plenty of vehicles with bigger motors giving better fuel economy, just go back to the old VC/VH commodores, my old man had both the 3.3L blue 6 cylinder and the 4.2 V8 blue motor, while both were not you what you would call powerfull the V8 was cheaper on fuel then the 6. the poor bugger certainly has some problems.
I have a n/a V8 in my Troopy and to date the only thing I have done is installed a 78 series genuine radiator, the old one was on the way out anyway and rebuilt the gearbox that was just plain worn out from to many K's and years. It has also done 50000k towing a van and many k's in the scrub and to date no problems (touch wood).
Mate had a Keith Black engine in his supercharged outlaw drag car and split the block from head to head, cost $70000, reason cause he loves to do it. Same as me I just like to play.
The only thing I would say is the fitter/ supplier would have known of these problems before they sold him the set-up. Not good karma at all.

i have an old chev and would not go bush without it... the grunt, the noise and the ease of repair i love....
i threw the autos' uni a few months back... didnt have a spare but the local town 10k's from where i broke down did have...
i was back on the road in less than two hours...
i doubt that would be the same for most brands...
